The service is free to tribal members, and is o f increas ing importance, because o f recent federal legislation. The goal o f the program, Armstrong says, “is to keep tribal land in tribal members’ hands.” Because o f a change in federal law governing dispo sition o f property following a tribal m ember’s passing, having a will has taken on g re a tei im portan ce, said Armstrong. Th e law d ictates how property will be distributed following the passing o f a tribal member who does not have a will. The way to avoid the situ ation, and côiifrôÎ the distri bution o f the estate, is to have a will, said Armstrong. Armstrong has her office at the Family Resource Cen ter.
