E Coosh E EWA: The w^y it is A closer look at the significance thank-you o f M em orial D ay A I would like to take this op B y Selena B o ise M anagement successor H ave you ever w ondered what Memorial Day really sig nifies? I used to think about that when I was little. We used to always visit the cemetery and clean graves and place flowers and crepe paper throughout the cem r etery. B ut today I Spilyay did som e read in g Speaks and searching for in V_______________ / fo rm atio n th at w ould tell me w hat it really means. Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan, national co m m an d er o f the G rand Army of the Republic, and was first observed on May 30,1868, when flowers were placed on the graves o f Union and Con federate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the north ern states. The South refused to ac knowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days un til after World War I. On M ay 3, 2000 Pres. Clinton released a m em oran dum called The National Mo m en t o f R em em b ran ce. It clearly states that it is a time to pause and remember the true meaning of Memorial Day. It represents a day o f na tional awareness and reverence, honoring those Americans who died while defending our nation and its values. While we should honor these heroes every day for the profound contribution they have made securing our nation’s freedom, we should honor them especially on Memorial Day. It further states that Ameri cans come together to recognize how fortunate we are to live in freedom and observe a univer sal “N ational Moment o f Re membrance” on each Memorial Day. It represents a simple and unifying way to commemorate ou r h isto ry and h o n o r the struggle to protect our freedoms. It further promoted that a “National Moment of Remem brance” occur at 3:00 p.m. (lo cal tim e) on each M em orial Day. Today, members o f the com munity still visit the cemetery, even in their busy lives, to deco rate graves. And today we have troops in Afghanistan and Iraq still serv ing our c o u n try’s freedom s. A m ericans w ill honor losses from the past up the present day with the recent losses. So, what will you be doing on May 29 at 3:00 p.m.? Boise Advertising Manager: Sam Howard Reporter: portunity to give thanks to the ones who made it possible for me to go on that trip to Visalia, Calif., for the Eighth Cav. Reg. reunion. It was a trip that let a lot of things come to light about my other buddies of mine, some that never came home. I feel better about m yself now that I know about others. I’m thankful the good Lord seen me fit to come home. The ones that helped me are my sis Hilda Culpus. She let me use her car to go and also with the finances. Also Neda Wesley and family. They helped with the finances for the round trip. May the good Lord bless you all with a hundred fold. Thanks again as ever in His service. M arvin Meanus. Box 870, Warm Springs, OR Spilyay Tymoo May 25, 2006 Letters to the Editor to give a blessing as the juvenile salmon start out on their new cycle of life. Most o f the hatchery staff joined in the ceremony led by Washat leader Fred Wallulatum. Included in this ceremony was a special prayer asking for for giveness for allowing the tribes sacred gift of life, the salmon, to be m ass-m arked, handled, and the injecting of a coded wire tag into their snouts. The salmon is very spiritual and sacred to the tribes of the Northwest. There is a sacred feast that honors the first fish caught before any fishing is al lowed. At all other tribal rituals the salmon is the tribe’s first dish on the tables and the first taste in our order of foods that the Creator has gifted to the river people. If the salmon are not honored, the tribe’s gifts of life will disappear. The tribes have to honor nature and all the natu ral resources. The tribe’s unwritten laws p arallel the Ten C om m and ments. The tribes must obey the laws of nature handed down by our elders for thousands o f years. Owees, Little Brother. Corps II On behalf o f the Museum At Warm Springs, I’d like to ex press heartfelt thanks for all the assistance we were given when the Park Service Corps of Dis covery II traveling exhibition visited the museum. Park Service staff and Na tio n al G uard m em bers who work with Corps II told us that th ey lo ved v is itin g W arm Springs and felt very welcomed and appreciated. They also told us that Warm Springs was one of their most successful venues. More than 1,400 students from Central Oregon visited the Mu seum on Monday and Tuesday o f the event. W e’ve received thank you letters from teachers who brought their classes to see Corps II and have heard posi tive com m ents from parents whose children gave them glow ing reports about their field trip to the museum. Many visitors came from the Bend area and we thank the High Desert Mu seum for recomm ending that their members visit us. I’d like to recognize Warm Springs Fire and Safety, whose management and staff stepped up and gave wonderful cover age and care before and during the event. Thank you to Tribal Utilities for helping before the event to mark water and sewer lines and add electrical capacity for the Corps II. Thank you to the BIA Road Department for providing electric signs that helped announce the event and increased visitor safety. Thanks to all the tribal departments, in cluding Planning, Government Affairs, and Administration for seeing us through the planning process for this event. We could not have done a project this large and complex without your help. The museum was fortunate to have talented com m unity members who delighted audi ences in the Tent o f M any Voices with presentations on topics rangin g from beaded dresses and baby boards to fish ing and ethno-botany. One of the highlights of the Tent of M any Voices was “Conversa tions with the Elders,” in which honored elders from W arm Springs took the time to share childhood memories with appre ciative audiences. Thank you also to the volunteers from Warm Springs and Madras who w o rked in the in fo rm a tio n booth and greeted people at the exhibits tent. The museum staff members who stepped up and stepped in whenever and wherever needed to m ake the ev en t w o rk smoothly deserve recognition for their work. They have my d eepest resp ect and thanks. Carol Leone, executive direc tor, the M useum at W arm Springs. Scale of truth What would it take to make you happy? The Creator said, “ ...h o w do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose or forfeit your own soul in the pro cess?” (Luke 9.25) M ore m oney, m ore p leasu re, and more friends can never replace your need for more time. Eventually you are going to run out of the one thing that m ost o f us take for granted. Whether you are living on the streets or in the largest mansion, every person will take their last breath of air they didn’t pay for and their heart will stop beating. Many people have joined the competition to determine “The biggest loser” here in Warm Springs. To enter the contest a small fee is paid. Then each per son is weighed on a scale and measurements are taken to find body fat, and whoever loses the m ost in so m any days wins. Great idea! The Creator is also going to place each person on a scale of truth and measure your faith fulness. Without trusting in Jesus Christ and follow ing Him in obedience you become the big gest loser. He paid the price. The Bible tells us, “What we do see is Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels and now is crowned with glory and honor because he suf fered death for us. Yes, by God’s grace, Jesus tasted death for ev eryone in all the world” (Heb 2.9). Life is not a competition, but your birth enters you into the C re a to r’s fu tu re ju d gm en t. Jo n a th a n R.
