M artinez girls excel at pitching By Dave McMechan Spilyay Tymoo The Chiloquin High School girls softball team, the Chiloquin Queens, had a great season this year. Two standout athletes on the squad are pitchers Spayne and Jade Martinez. The Martinez girls, who are twins, are freshmen at the high school, but already they are outstanding pitchers. The girls are the granddaughters of Urbana “Toto” Ross, and Dan Martinez, both of the Warm Springs. The other grandparents are Art Ochoa, and Kathleen and Je ff Mitchell of Chiloquin. The girls’ parents are the late Joel Martinez, and Lisa Ochoa. The Chiloquin Queens came very close to making the state softball tournament, losing the final Southern Cas cade League tournament game by one run. Making it to the league tournament was a great ac complishment in itself. A few weeks ago, at the end of the regular season, there was one spot left in the tournament, and the Queens were playing against the Honkers. This was a must-win game, with the winner heading to the league tournament and the loser go ing home. ' - ■ I Spayne Martinez was the pitcher. At one point early in the game, she had a runner 1m on third with one out. She struck out the next two batters to end the inning. It can find the weak link in your home’s fire protec tion design and get the upper hand because of something that has been overlooked or some other seemingly insignificant as pect. When designing your defen Page 3 May 25, 2006 Spilydy Tymoo, W ^rm Springs, Oregon sible space start with the easiest and least expensive actions. Begin your work closest to your house and move outward. Keep working on the more difficult items until you have completed your entire project. Two factors have been estab lished as the primary causes of a home’s ability to survive a wildfire. These are the home’s roof ing material and the quality of your defensible space surround ing it. Use fire-resistant materi als (class C or better) to roof your home. Don’t use wood or shake shingles as these provide no protection from fire. When your roof needs significant re pair or replacement do so with a fire-resistant roofing material such as composite shingles, metal, tile or a non-combustible shake material. Defensible space is an area around a structure where fuels and vegetation are treated, cleared or reduced to slow the spread of a wildfire towards the structure.
