Trudell film This is an open letter to the people. On May 26 the movie Trudell will be shown at 7:15 p.m. Mt. H ood C om m unity College Theater at 26000 S.E. Stark St. in Gresham. The film begins in the late sixties, when Trudell and the Indians of All Tribes occupied Alcatraz for 21 months and effectively created the co n tem p o rary In d ian people’s movement. It then fol lows his political journey as the spokesm an o f the A m erican Indian Movement (AIM). In Washington, D.C.,in 1979, w h ile p ro te stin g the government’s unjust treatment of the case of Leonard Peltier, John burned an American flag on the steps o f the J. Edgar Hoover building, the FBI head quarters. Hours later he was told his family was murdered in a suspicious arson fire on the Nevada reservation. On May 27 Trudell will give a presenta tion, at the same location as above, at 7 p.m. Tickets for this event can be purchased at the door for $5. On M ay 27 from 12 noon to 5 p.m. there is scheduled a free event at PSU Native Ameri can Student and Com m unity Center. There will be story-teller Ed Edmo and a feast of celebra tion. Class reunion Awareness The Chemawa Indian School Class of 1986 is welcoming all alumni who graduated in 1946, ‘56, ‘66, ‘76, ’86 and ‘96 to help celebrate with the graduating class of 2006. Fantastic job The group of riders who at tended the parade at San Juan Capistrano in California did a fantastic job representing the communities of Warm Springs and Madras. Over 130 people attended the event and there is huge in terest for next year. Jo h n n y and Ja sp e r Sm ith stepped up as young men and leaders and role models in the program. One horse from the program w as raffled o ff in San Ju an Capistrano by the parade orga nizers, the Fiesta Association. The horse earned over $5,000, w hich was split betw een the group and the Fiesta Associa tion. We traveled just over 2,300 miles in the course of the trip thanks to the use of the Free M ethodist van. Families from Com m unity Presbyterian and the Carry Miller ranch hosted the groqp. These experiences can shape child developm ent and have consequences that last years, even lifetimes. Research now shows that the physical, psychological, and be havioral consequences of child abuse and neglect impact not just the child and family, but the community as a whole. The immediate physical ef fects of abuse can range from re la tiv e ly m in o r, such as a bruise or cut, to severe, such as broken bones, internal bleeding, or even death. Longer-term consequences may include: Shaken Baby Syn drom e (inclu d ing blin dness, learning disabilities, mental re tardation, cerebral palsy, or pa ralysis), impaired brain develop m ent, lifelo ng poor physical health. The immediate psychological effects of abuse and neglect — isolation, fear, and a lack of trust — can spiral into long-term mental health consequences in cluding: Depression and anxiety, low self-esteem, difficulty establish ing and m aintaining relation ships, eating disorders, and sui cide attempts. Studies have found abused or neglected children to be at least 25 percent more likely to | experience problems in adoles- I cence, including: Delinquency, teen pregnancy, j drug use, low academic achieve ment. As adults, children who ex perienced abuse or neglect have an increased likelihood of crimi nal behavior, involvement in vio lent crime, abuse of alcohol and ; other drugs, and abusive behav- ior..
