-Spilyay Tyvnoo, Warm Springs, Oregon Survey studies community health The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs Com m unity Health Education Team is con ducting an important research study about health behavior, at titudes and knowledge. This study called the Behav ioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey is funded by the Native American Research Cen ter for Health. The Community Health Edu cation Team (CHET) depart ment will randomly select tribal participants to take part in this survey and will contact you by mail. To schedule your survey date, time and location, please call or visit the C H ET office. You may complete the survey in private and answering the Page 3 May 11, 2006 questions will take about 35 minutes. In appreciation for your time, please join us for a meal served at the longhouse. Multiple meal times have been scheduled for your conve nience. Surveying will be at the Agency Longhouse on Wednes day, May 24. I f this option doesn’t fit your schedule, we will also survey at the Simnasho Longhouse Tuesday, May 30 and Wednesday, June 7. Survey participants have the option o f joining us for a lunch or dinner meal at 12 and 6 p.m., respectively, and completing their survey. In addition, those who complete the survey will receive a prize. Refusing to take part or with drawing from the survey will not affect your health care services or the benefits you receive from the C onfederated Tribes o f Warm Springs and/or the Health and Wellness Center. Your participation in the survey will help the C onfederated Tribes o f Warm Springs better assess health needs and plan for our future. Smith o f Warm Springs told fB members o f the Senate Select Indian Affairs Committee his “beliefs and philosophy” on In dian matters at his confirmation hearing. Smith, who has been General Manager here since 1971, was nominated earlier this year by Pres. Reagan to be the Depart ment o f the Interior’s Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs. In other news: W hen a farm er near the Prineville area was plowing up his field earlier this month he uncovered a human skull. After investigating, he discovered sev eral burial sites and immediately con tacted anthrop ologist Suzanne Crowley. She then no tified the Warm Springs Tribal Council o f the finding and they authorized her to work at the site. So far, two undisturbed grave sites have been discovered and the remains o f four indi viduals have already been un covered. Crowley said all appear to be young males and she esti mates their time o f death to have been the early 1800s. N elson W allulatum, who went to the site with V iola Kalama and Felix Wallulatum, said there are some confusing aspects about this burial site and the circumstances surrounding the deaths. The individuals may have been Paiutes who were root dig ging in the area, but Wallulatum said some o f the personal items appear to have com e from around The Dalles. And in other news: Chrome-plated shovels glis tened in the sunlight as the groundbreaking ceremony for the Confederated Tribes’ hydro electric project began Wednes day, April 22. The event drew a KATU (channel 2) news crew, reporters from several newspa pers, officials, tribal members and associates. Seated on the patriotically wrapped platform at the Reregulating Dam site were chiefs Nelson Wallulatum, Amos Simtustus and Nick Kalama, all dressed in full regalia. Diabetes graduation celebration The Warm Springs Spe cial Diabetes Program for Indians cordially invites you to attend our gradua tion celebration for the 2006 inaugural class. The graduation celebration will feature a catered dinner, recognition o f graduates as well as an overview o f the Warm Springs Special Dia betes Program for Indians. Program staff will also provide diabetes screening and diabetes prevention education. The 2006 graduation cel ebration will be at Kah-Nee- Ta starting at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, May 19. The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 27 in the COCC gymnasium. The students need help in shaping the event into a cel ebration honoring the accomplishments o f the Native Ameri can students at the community college. Drummers, dancers and artists are needed.
