Ti i FTJ Buffs lose to 1 team 5 TAe Madras White Buffaloes had (heir hands full with the defending state champions the Hood River Eagles on their field. I he Buffaloes dropped a 25-6 game on September 7, 1990. n ... Crook County escapes with narrow win As I see them... After a convinc ing win on the road wit h the opener at Seaside, things sort of turned s.our over the past two weeks for the Madras White Buffalo football team. The Buffaloes traveled to the Hood River Valley to mix it up withthcNo. I rated Hood River Valley Eagles, who are the defending champions of Ihc state in the 3A category and what used to be the AA league at that time. The Buffaloes took it right to the host Hood River team holding them on their first possession of the football after the kick-off. After taking over the ball, the Buffs marched right up the field on a couple of good pass plays and Tony Holliday cracking over to paydirt to give the Buffs first score of the game to lead 6-0, after the kick failed. Hood River came right back to score on a long pass to even things out and their kick failed leaving the score 6-6, after one quarter of play. The game was played pretty even throughout the second quarter but just before half, Hood River kicked a field goal to take a 9-6 lead going into the intermission. In the third quarter things tighten ed up on the Buffs and they were unable to score any more points while Hood River came back with another field goal in the third quart er. The Buffs were sort of bogged down and were unable to move the ball against the defending champs. In the thrid quarter Hood River connected on a long pass to go all the way for the score. With the kick good, the Hood River team was in ; a commanding lead. Still the Buffs were unable to get a drive going and before the third quarter ended. Hood River added another field goal to sweeten their pot to the lead 1 9-6. During the final quarter Hood River iced (he game with the final scoring drive to give them a 25-6 win over the visiting White Buffalo team. The game was a lot closer than what the score makes it look. The Buff defense broke through several times sacking the Hood River ' quarterback. It was just little things that spoiled somcthi ng good and 1 1 ood River was able to capitalize and produce the scores. The home opener was a bummer for the White Buffaloes as the 4-A Crook County Cowboys came to town to squeak out a 1 3-7 win over the host Buffs. It was pretty much a defensive game as neither team could get a good drive' going. Crook County scored first and they led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter Tony Holliday went weaving his way into the end zone and a kick by Justin Chester evened things up and the teams took the intermission in a 7-7 deadlock. It was the popping of the pads for both teams in the third quarter as each defensive team gave much ground. Although there were some good plays, the drive stalled and after three quarters, the score stood at 7-7. In the final quarter, the Cowboys marched down the field right to the two yard line where the Buff defense held the Cowboys and took over the ball. But the Buffs were unable to moce the ball and Ryan Boyle was to punt from the end zone when the Cowboys burst through the line to block the punt. Braves prepare for season Chemawa Braves are preparing for the fall sports in the 2-A, Tri River league of schools which in clude the Colton Vikings, Gervais Cougars, Jefferson Lions, Ken nedy Trojans, Regis Rams, Salem Academy Crusaders, Santiam Wolverines Scio loggers. . With the schoolyear just getting underway at Chemawa, the ath letic programs are far behind all the schools in the state, This year there will be no football program at all there, one reason is because of the late start with the school where the kids are already behind a couple of games of the other schools and they haven't even started practice. So there is no football this year. The Chemawa Braves will par ticipate in Cross Country and Vol leyball. According to Brenda Bremner who is the Athletic Direc tor and girls volleyball coach said they had their first practice season this past Monday. So far she has four returnees. Those who are moving up show good promise. They have already had to forfeit . some league games. They will have their first league game next Wed nesday when they host Salem A cademy September 26. Bremner expects to see Regis and Kennedy as top contenders in tne league this year and she hopes that Chemawa can compete well with the league and hopefully make the play-offs. The Cross Country team has two returnees and they will fill the rest of the team as fast as they can. The Chemawa Invitational is their first meet in October and hopefully they will be in full force with both a boys and a girls team. Co-ed team enters Butte .
