J": E' t :&ai iwl listen Runners of all shapes, sizes and ages converged on Kah-Nee-Ta Village to partake in the annual Kah-Nee-Ta Mini-Marathon. The weather, with moderate temperatures, made for perfect running conditions. Entrants were given swim passes to the Village pool to cool off after the run. 158 runners complete marathon courses I Runners checked the three and six mile course map before the beginning of the race. The course had participants running on highway 8 along the Warm Springs River and through Kah-Nee-Ta Golf Course. There was a total of 158 runm s who covered the 14.5, the 10 K and the three mile runs on a hot Satur day, April 25, 1987. The run from Simnasho and Kah-Nee-Ta drew a total of 35 hardened individuals who ran the course in some good times. The race was won by David Steffens, of Portland, Oregon, with the time of 1 : 16.59. Steffens said, "The course was a good challenge and had very good scenery, with all the mountains in the background." What made it more rewarding was a sign which said, "Congratulations, you've made it, the rest of the race is all down hill." The sign was on top of the hill near the LeClaire place. In second place was David Petersen of Bend, his time was 1:18.59, two minutes behind the winner. Jeffery Sherman of Blue River, Oregon took third place, his time was 1:24.35. Madras, finals in Las Vegas May 2-5. The LaPine dismiss 1:50, return 7: 15 team of Edison Yazzie, Buck Smith and Roy Begody placed fifth in the May 14 Prineville, Culver Madras finals standing. The three mile run took the majority of the entries with a total of 74 runners pounding the path through the course. The race was won by Scott Stinett of Madras, with the time of 25.6, second went to Marvin L. Arquette, his time 26.50, and third went to Jode Goudy with 27.30 and a whole bunch of runners straggling in. Terry Sullivan of Portland won the 10-K run turning in a time of 33 minutes and 48 seconds. Mark Delbrurge of Eugene, Oregon, came in second with the time of 35.26, Carl Roelle of Prineville, was third, his time 35.37, Ed Henderson of Warm Springs fourth with the time of 38.40. It was a great day for the run and the turn-out was much better than Spilyay lymoo photo by Bekrend last year. The run from Simnasho to Kah-Nee-Ta makes it a very challenging course. A route a lot of runners like and probably will enter that run next year. The toughest part of the whole affair was those who did the work in putting on the whole thing as the race was a big success, and was well organized. The tournament was hosted by the Warm Springs Boxing Club. Four local boxers won their weight division championships dur ing two-day boxing tournament: Novice, IO-l I years, 156 lbs., Paul Brown; Open 1 2-1 3 years, 95 lbs., Frank Brunoe; Open I2-I3 years, 1 32 lbs.
