Warm Springs Elementary goals for 1986-87 progress report The staff and students are con tinuing to work towards achieving our goals. As I told you in a pre vious newsletter, the teachers and I continue to meet twice each month to discuss our progress and develop new strategies for meeting each goal. The following is a summary of our progress. 1 .0 Increase family involvement in school activities Most classes have already achieved their goal of having 100 of the families of the children in a -Yvr-- i 7 'k 8th Grade Honor Roll (3.00 3.49) Eldo Badten, Susan Boatman, Scoti Brown, Thomas Burlingame, Phylli; Crask, Jennifer Dreger, Chad Duff Tina Garcia, Kelly Glenn, Anthony Gonzales, Kip Gray, Jennifei Hackman, Kenneth Hart, Michelc Huntington, Morningstar Johnson. All of the classes will con tinue to invite family members to participate in their class and all school activities. Please check our "Calendar of Events" and see if there are activities in which you could participate. On May 15, the students will be participating in the national "Just Say No" to drugs and alcohol event. At noon, the children will be lining up at the WSE track to run or walk a mile to advertise their commitment to "Just Say No." You are welcome and encouraged to attend this event. Many parents guardians are stopping by to check on their child's progress. Parents guardians are al ways welcome at school and should not hesitate to stop by to talk to a teacher. 2.0 Improve student academic per formance in a targeted area. Each grade level has chosen one area to emphasize this year. Below you will find a list of those areas that are getting extra attention at each grde level: First grade vo cabulary and speaking in complete sentences; second grade writing sentences; third grade language; fourth grade vocabulary and punctuation; and, fifth grade vo cabulary. Every two weeks the teachers in each grade level sit down together and plan what they will do for the next two weeks to give students extra practice in these areas. On Friday, May 1, your child should have given you the results of the CAT (California Achievement Test). Currently, the staff is analyz ing those results to determine what progress was made in the above areas. Although we have not com pleted a detailed analysis of the scores, there is an overall upward trend in the children's performance. We are very proud of how hard the students have worked this year and are pleased with these results. 3.0 Establish a Warm Springs Pre vention Team which meets weekly to monitor student attendance and develop ways to solve attendance problems. During our April Awards Assem bly, we presented the third quarter's Feather Awards for regular atten dance. This award is given to stu dents who missed no more than three days during the quarter. We presented this award to 181 stu dents. Our apreciation goes out to all of thechildrens'family members w ho help them to get to school on time every day. 4.0 Develop programs for improv ing students' writing During April the fourth graders took the first state test on writing. Eight Madras High School stu dents were selected to attend the United National Indian Youth (UNITY) conference May 1-4 in Denver, Colorado. In this project five elders from the community worked with the first and second grade classes to help with the drug and alcohol education program, "Here's Look ing At You." These folks each attended four sessions with a class room. While in the classroom, they assisted the teacher with the lesson and gave their thoughts, advice and encouragement to the child ren. It was a wonderful experience for the children. Many thanks goes to the follwoing elders for their special contributions to our drug and alcohol education program: Lizzy Rhoan Dawn Smith's first grade; Lillian and Alvin Smith Donna Rodgers and Russell Kais er's first grade; Mary Ann Meanus David Wickham's second grade; and Sylvia Wallullatum-Mary Sol iz's second grade. 7.0 Develop classroom activities for teaching Indian culture through out the curriculum. During the first week in June, the children will be receiving in struction in Indian dance. Each year, Dave Jordan coordinates this program, where community peo ple help us to teach Indian dance to all of the children. At the end of the week we have scheduled a mini powwow. It will begin at 1:15 p.m. and be over when the children go home at 3:20. Please plan to attend this end-of-the-year celebration. The children have had a great year at school and there is much to celebrate. Harry Phillips and Mary Soliz are hard at work assisting teachers and students to prepare for our Science Health Fair on May 8. Students will be doing experiments and taking surveys using the scien tific method. The students hope to have their data collected and dis plays completed by the 8th. Com munity members aree invited to attend the fair in the afternoon of that day. Mary Soliz' s second grade class has started a new project in their reading class. Twice each week the students will be working on writing their own books. There are three different reading groups in the room, and each group is working on writing a different kind of book. One group is making a picture book and writing a story to go along with the pictures. The next group is writing a book based on different shapes. The third group is writing a book of their choice. Mr. Phillips'fifthgradeclass has been working on writing paragraphs about strange animals. They have been writing three different types of paragraphs descriptive, narra tive and opinion.
