The dockworkers, mostly shore gangs who handle the dircot traf fic in the port, joined 10,000 ship, yard workers and repairmen who have been on strike since Satur day as part of a nationwide stop page in support of a 10 per cent wage increase. Section" 2 Patre 5 Wayne Ericksen Elected to Board Of Co-op at OSC OREGON STATE COLLEGE (Special) Wayne Richard Erick sen of Salem has been elected by student vote to the co-op board of directors at Oregon State College, Composed of seven student mem bers and two faculty members, the board supervises the OSC Co op book store, which stocks stu dent supplies. Other facilities in the store include a post office and a priming service. Ericksen, a junior in business and technology, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bjarne Ericksen of 740 Candalcria Blvd., Salem. He is a 1954 graduate of Salem High School. Holmes Urges 'Horn-Tooting' PORTLAND (UP)-Gov. Robert D. Holmes declared here last night that Oregon sells itself short when it fails to call the nation's attention to its assets and needs. Holmes spoke at a meeting be fore the Propeller Club of Port land and representatives of Co lumbia river and Oregon coast ports. The governor said abundant low cost power and a navigable chan nel on the Columbia river could combine to develop a great indus trial civilization in Oregon if peo ple would, develop the necessary ports. He said Oregon was not sharing in the defense effort on the scale that it should. He said shipbuild ing and ship repairing had dis appeared to a large extent since the last war. Holmes cited facilities in Port land such as the Swan Island drv- docks and public ' docks as ex amples of the area s own initiative. Teamsters Not To Let Inquiry Hold Up Drive TOLEDO, Ohio IB A top offi cial of the Teamsters Union says the probe into the union's activi ties now under way in Washington will not hinder the Teamsters' plans "to spend millions of dol lars to start a vigorous organizing campaign." Lawrence Steinberg, president of the Teamsters Joint Council 44 in this area and coordinator of the 33,000-membcr Joint Council 53 in Philadelphia, told a meeting of 500 Teamsters officers and stewards: "As far as the Teamsters are concerned, we are not going to be detoured one moment from our main goal organizing the unor ganized." His audience here, representing 9,600 members of Local 20, passed a resolution to join in "any local or national defense committee that may be organized in the de fense of our national leadership, and to support such a committee morally and financially." Steinberg called indictment of Teamsters Vice President James R. Hoffa on charges of conspiracy and bribery "a perfect frameup." He said the Senate probe's main disclosure has been that the Teamsters Union "is extremely active in political action, and that appears to be illegal in the eyes of this committee."
