Rear Adm. Rohert W. Knox, at: ing director of the survey, said s'i'.e civil defense authorities on th? Pacific Coast asked for the extension. In the past the survey ' has notified West Coast states of (he alerts it issue at Honolulu. There has been little damage along the coast, however, from tit'al waves of any source. . The warning system was estab lished in 1048 after the great tidal wave of IMS that killed 173 per s :s nnd caused 21 million dol lars damage at llilo. Hawaii. The relic, a towing bilt from : the ship's hull, was removed when a Kawasaki. Japan, firm scrapped the ship. The firm offered it to Portland.
