R. E. M. Dps Islets, chief engineer in charge of the entire project. Located on an upper floor of this building were draft ing rooms in which many Salem, men prepared and checked plans for the camp's 1.800 structures, i Wrecking Many Buildings Besides Post Headquarters, E. S. Ritter & Co. is wrecking 14 other buildings for salvage. Among these is the transportation build ing, 260 feet in length, 25 feet wide and with six wings. Some structures have been purchased from the wrecker and are being moved in sections by churches and other organizations. Col. Des Islets told the Salem Chamber of Commerce, Feb. 26, 1942, that "speed is the order, costs are forgotten." During the summer of 1942. no less than 8.000 men were employ ed in construction at Camp Adair and the payroll was $2,000,000 a month. The first soldier arrived in June and because no barrack was completed to receive him, he was bedded down in a fire hall. 4 Divisions Trained Four infantry divisions were trained at Camp Adair between 1942 and 1945 ; 70th, or Trailblazer; 91st or Powder River; 96th, or Deadeye; and the 104th, or Tim berwolf division. Most troops vacated Camp Adair during August of 1944 and when the camp was declared sur plus Dec. 18, 1945, Col. Lawrence Norman, commander since 1945, had only a station complement and a group of German war pris oners there.
