New Device May Change Ways Of Heating, Cooling Homes By BARMAN W. NICOLS (United Praia SUM CorraapoodcDt) Washington, June 21 W.PJ One of these days the farm folks may be all glassed in mom, dad, the kids, the hired man, plus the sow and the cow and Biddie, the hen. '. They'll be cooler In the summer and warmer In the winter. same as the city slickers, ah nf thi in txiastble because j of a new device that can direct the angle at which the sun win shine on a building in any part 4 the country at any time of the tfay. It was demonstrated at the annual meeting of the American Society of Agricultural engineers. ' The Instrument Is known as a solarometer and was perfected by engineers of Libbey-O wens Ford Glass Company. It was uaed to show how the width of a roof overhead or shade ran be determined to give a building the right shade to make It warmer In Decemoer anu cooler in July. rjavid C. SDraKue. an agri cultural engineering consultant from Pennsylvania State college, has spent 5 months looking over buildings where the mach ine has been used to put the right kind of glass in the right peaces. ' ' You don't use the machine on the farm just the glass uauallv of oicture-wlndow sue instead Of the french-wlndow type generally found In old fashioned cow-barns, hog houses, Vand homes. In a solar-designed building, the large glass must be self -insulating shaded in the summer and open to the sun in the winter. The Instrument itself is com plicated, at least for guys like me. It must be set to demon strate the angle the sun will shine on a building in any com munity. Then the gimmick sends a mechanical "sun" in an arc from dawn to dark in the proper path for that latitude. All of that was part of the demonstra tion, According to Sprague, such glass of the modern double-pane kind used in ranch-type homes already has been put to use on farms. The scientist says that's all a . matter of humidity. If you can control the sun, you can keep the dampness down and the cows give with more milk, and are more contented. The hens lay better and cackle louder. "When smaller panes are used In barns," he said, "dust and dirt collects and such windows won't last very long. I've seen timothy hay growing out of the sills, it was so damp. It's better, too if you can air-condition a barn." The Pennsylvania agricultur- to keep fif Let Sun Valley add variety to "Bread Hungry dieta and ufefy, too. J 9 WITHOUT I SHOITiNIM 01 1 kwntm j 1st said that Isn't as silly as it sounds. A farmer worth a fork of hay can install the equipment himself and the whole works, blower and all, won't cost more than $150. If he has electricity, he can run the business for a few cents a day and can have more contented cows and louder- grunting, fatter pigs in dry buildings. Butch Given Hero's Reward Des Moines, la., June 21 OI.R) Butch, a dog who saved his two-year-old master from drowning, reaped a hero's award today an ice box full of beef. "When he finishes that, he can have more," said Mrs. John Reed. Her son, La Mont, fell into a water-filled pit, seven feet deep, yesterday. Butch, a mongrel, grabbed the boy's s hirt with his teeth and held his head above water for an estimated 10 min utes. His growling finally attracted the attention of La Mont's three older brothers who were playing nearby By the time they brought their mother, Butch had dragged La Mont from the water.
