8 Capital Journal, Salem, Proposed Dams Are Described 1 Portland. Oct. 21 (VP) Details of the seven earth dams propos ed for tributaries of the MeKen sue and South Santiam rivers in the army engineers' flood con trol program were outlined to day. ' Col. O. E. Walsh, district en gineer, reported the dams will range in height from 120 to 335 feet with storaRe . capacities Varying from 40.000 to 235,000 acre feet. " The largest will be the Peter Green dam on the Middle San tlam, seven miles east of Sweet Home. It will be 316 feet high and store 255,000 acre feet from a: drainage area of 27f square miles. Cost Is estimated at $I3.' 200.000. An additional 25 feet n height could enable produc lion of 21,000 kilowatts of ppwer. The smallest will be the Jor dan dam on Thomas creek, seven miles east of Scio. It will be 120 feet high of earth and grav el, storing 53,000 acre feet and cosling $1,000,000 The Wiley creek dam, five irtiles southeast of Sweet Home would bo 205 feet high, storing 42,000 acre-feet from an area of 53 square miles and costing $2, 600.000. Z Highest of the McKcnzie area rfcims would be the 335 feet high Cpugar creek dam six miles southeast of Blue river. Costing SfJ 1,100,000, it would store 130,- 000 acre-feet from an area of 88 square miles. ,Otlicrs would be the Sim inonds creek dam on Blue river, 25 feet high, at $5,800,000; Gale crock dam near Vida, 210 rjjot high, at $3,300,000; Horse creek dam, 240 feet high, at $6,800,000. Oct. 21 M'i West Coast Air Lines reported today it would erect a station house at the Portland-Columbia air port before November 1 in prep aration for inauguration of flights next month. Eight flights a day will land at Portland from western Ore gon and Washington terminal cities on the company's new routes. Ground crews will be stationed here and at Medford for service checks, with maintc nance work to be done at the Seattle terminal. The firm is authorized to op erate Portland-Seattle flights on two routes: Portland, Chchalis- Ccntralia, Olympia. Tacoma. Seattle; Portland, Astoria, Abcr-rieen-Hoquiam, Olympia and Seattle. The Oregon routes are authorized from Portland, Mc Minnvillc, Albany - Corvallis. Eugene, Coos Bay-North Bend, Roscbcrg, Grants Pass and Med ford. The Grants Pass area will not be served until airport improvements are made. Dave Martin, public relations director, reported the starting of full service has been delay ed by lack of equipment. The firm has 25 DC-3 24-passengcr craft on order, but has receiv ed only one. Bailey, 78, former editor of the Oregon Grange Bulletin and widely known for his acti vity in agriculture, died in the hospital here Saturday night. Dr. Bailey, a native of New York state and educated in Mi chigan, moved to Oregon in 1908 after practicing dentistry in Detroit from 1897. He pur chased a farm on South Deer Creek eight miles east of Rose burg and later pioneered in growing broccoli and other crops in Douglas county. He served as county fruit inspector for many years and sponsored organization of several farm cooperatives. lie was president of the Ore gon State Horticultural society in 1916 and 1917. The widow, a son, William H. Bailey, and one grandson, all of Roseburg, survive. funeral services will be held tomorrow. Band Association Calls Meeting The Salem High School Band and Orchestra association will discuss plans for the fall and winter season during a confer ence called for 8 o'clock Wed nesday night in the band room. The organization expects a busy season and urges full attend ance at the first meeting.
