of the seven earth dams propos
ed for tributaries of the MeKen
sue and South Santiam rivers in
the army engineers' flood con
trol program were outlined to
day.
' Col. O. E. Walsh, district en
gineer, reported the dams will
range in height from 120 to 335
feet with storaRe . capacities
Varying from 40.000 to 235,000
acre feet.
" The largest will be the Peter
Green dam on the Middle San
tlam, seven miles east of Sweet
Home. It will be 316 feet high
and store 255,000 acre feet from
a: drainage area of 27f square
miles. Cost Is estimated at $I3.'

The smallest will be the Jor
dan dam on Thomas creek, seven
miles east of Scio. It will be

Auto Mechanics in
Medford Threaten

automobile mechanics idled
since early July in their strike
for a closed shop contract to
day indicated a "general labor
holiday" may be called in the
area unless employers accept
their demands
Unions affiliated with the
central labor council here have
set a second meeting for Oct
25. to discuss details of the
strike action which union
spokesmen said was in answer
to the "arbitrary altitude" of
the automobile dealers.

Coast Air Lines reported today
it would erect a station house
at the Portland-Columbia air
port before November 1 in prep
aration for inauguration of
flights next month.
Eight flights a day will land
at Portland from western Ore
gon and Washington terminal
cities on the company's new
routes. Ground crews will be
stationed here and at Medford
for service checks, with maintc
nance work to be done at the
Seattle terminal.
The firm is authorized to op
erate Portland-Seattle flights on
two routes: Portland, Chchalis-
Ccntralia, Olympia. Tacoma.
Seattle; Portland, Astoria, Abcr-rieen-Hoquiam,
Olympia and
Seattle. The Oregon routes are
authorized from Portland, Mc
Minnvillc, Albany - Corvallis.
Eugene, Coos Bay-North Bend,
Roscbcrg, Grants Pass and Med
ford. The Grants Pass area
will not be served until airport
improvements are made.

Former Grange
Editor Passes
Roseburg, Oct. 21 Wl Dr. C.
H. Bailey, 78, former editor of
the Oregon Grange Bulletin
and widely known for his acti
vity in agriculture, died in the
hospital here Saturday night.
Dr. Bailey, a native of New
York state and educated in Mi
chigan, moved to Oregon in
1908 after practicing dentistry
in Detroit from 1897. He pur
chased a farm on South Deer
Creek eight miles east of Rose
burg and later pioneered in
growing broccoli and other
crops in Douglas county. He
served as county fruit inspector
for many years and sponsored
organization of several farm
cooperatives.
lie was president of the Ore
gon State Horticultural society
in 1916 and 1917.
The widow, a son, William H.
Bailey, and one grandson, all
of Roseburg, survive.
funeral services will be held
tomorrow.

housing expediter's office will
launch construction of steel
homes here at the rate of 100
to 200 a month in a portion of
a war-built shipyard plant, In
sulated Steel Homes. Inc., re
ported today.
D. H. Joyce, one of the com
pany organizers, said the six
room units to sell at $8,000 to
$3,500 erected on the owner's
lot would be fabricated at the
Gundcrson Bros., plant.
On the site erection can be
completed in five to seven days
after laying of a concrete slab,
Joyce said. Chimney and fire
place openings- could be cut in
to the steel "stressed skin" type
walls by torch after erection.
The first will be completed
within 10 days after receiving
the steel allocation from Wash
ington, D.C., Joyce reported.

fight extradition to Vale, Ore.,
where she and her chauffeur,
Albert Lee Williams, 23. are
jointly charged with the murder
of her husband, was to be de
cided today.
The woman, whose wealthy
rancher-husband, W. D. Broad
hurst. 51. was found slugged
and shot on a desolate road be
tween his Caldwell dairy farm
and his Jordan Valley, Ore.,
cattle ranch, conferred In jail
here with her attorney.
