It. Col. Patch In Regulars Freenville, AAB, S.C. An nouncement was made hy the Third air force headquarters here August 16 of the commis sioning to the grade of a first lieutenant in the regular United States army of Lt. Col. Horace Wendall Patch. Patch, attached to the 303rd AAF base unit at this air base, where he heads the movements and operations section of the A 3 section Third air force head quarters, spent 43 months on overseas duty. He was in Alaska for 20 months and in the China-Burma-India theater, where he was head of a combat operation section, for 20 months. He has the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star with Cluster, the Air Medal with Cluster, and . three combat theater ribbons. Given his pilot's wings at Stockton field, Calif., March 14, 1941, Col. Patch attended com mand and generals staff school, the AAF air intelligence school, AAF staff officers' course and AAF flying school. Patch's wife is the former He len R. Kestley of Salem, Ore. (His mother is Mrs. Frances M. Patch of Canby, Ore. Region Seeking Open Rent Deal Pointing out that many per sons living outside the municipal boundaries of Salem would gain no benefit from a local rent con trol measure, Don Goode, com mander of American Legion Post No. 136, Tuesday night asked that the situation here be kept open for OPA action if that step is deemed necessary. The post went on record as favoring in clusion in the proposed city rent control ordinance, a provision that OPA stabilization take over If the situation gets out of hand. Church Transferred Silverton F. H. Church, manager of the Silverton Serv ice Lumber company, is trans ferred to the Portland section, leaving here September 1. His local successor will be Virgil Heddleston, his assistant since the opening of the plant here more than a year ago. l ; fuJU , I Horace Wendall Patch Democrats Plan Portland Rally Portland, Aug. 21 A big day for Oregon democrats is plan ned for Thursday, August 22, when county chairmen, vice chairmen and democrats gener ally from all sections of the state will gather at the Multno mah hotel in Portland for a con ference dealing with the com ing congressional and other campaigns. Three national representa tives of the democratic party will be in Oregon for the ses sion. They are Richard Nacy, executive vice chairman; Mrs. George Tillott, vice chairman of women's activities, and Sam O'Neal, publicity director of the democratic national committee. The visitors will spend their time conferring with party lead ers and workers from all over the state. A luncheon meeting is being planned by Mrs. Nancy Robin son at the hotel during Thurs day's noon hour, and the three officials will have an opportu nity to discuss campaign procedure. Sample Copies Furlough Form A samDle copy of the applica tion form and instructions to en listed men of World War H in applying for their unused term inal leave or furlough pay was received this week by the de partment of veterans' affairs, from Major Gen. G. B. Erskine, re-training and re-employment administrator. An accompanying letter to Di rector George E. Sandy said that all community advisory centers and county veterans' service of fices would receive the sample forms shortly. Although postoffices will re ceive supplies soon for veterans, the sample form will enable ser vice officers to study the instruc tions and be ready to help veter ans make their applications when the time comes, Sandy said. Earlier doubt as to whether photostatic copies of discharges would be accepted as proof of military service was clarified as follows: "We know you were glad to learn that the armed forces acted favorably on the recommenda tion that photostatic copies of discharge papers, as well as or iginals, will be accepted." "Pass," "liberty," or periods of temporary duty are not chargeable as leave or furlough, nor are sick, convalescent, or he habilitation leave, but "delay en route" will be, the instructions indicate. UB Church Will Hold Meeting The 93rd session of the Ore gon Conference of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ convenes at the Engiewood United Brethren church 9 a.m., August 22 with Bishop Ira D. Warner presiding. This confer ence will be an historic one since it will be the last one held before the union of the United Brethren and Evangel ical churches nest November. The Evangelical church of Sa lem will join the churches of Oregon conference in a special holy communion service at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, with Dr. Paul Petticord, superintendent of the Evangelical churches of Oregon, delivering the communion mes sage. Thursday morning Bishop Warner will address the con ference on "What Is Protestant ism?" Following this will be I the roll call of pastors and drie j gates. The memorial service j for Rev. C. W. Loomis will com J plete the morning's activities, Thursday evening. Dr. W. R Montgomery, general director of adult and brotherhood work of the denomination, from Day ton, Ohio, will begin a series of six addresses, three of which will be given during tlic ses sions of conference, the rest to be the main address of the eve ning Thursday through Satur day. Sunday morning. Bishop Warner will bring the message at 10:30 o'clock after which the pastors of Oregon and Washing ton will receive their appoint ments. Conference officers are: Rev. R. C.
