Chapter 2 "No, you are not through with the store, Christopher," there Was an unrelenting determina tion in her voice that he in stinctively resented.. "The time has come for you to take up your responsibilities there, just as your father and grandfather did before you " "We'll not go into family his tory, either," Christopher inter rupted irritably, "I'm fed up with that too if you must know. I'll decide what my re sponsibilities are and what I yhall do with them. I'm through letting other people run my life." Two pairs of brown eyes stared at each other across the length of the room. They were curiously alike the shrewd old eyes and the resentful young ones. Something aloof and sure and stubborn, marked the ra ther striking family resemblance between these two. He'd have to hear it some time, he might as well stay and take it now nothing stopped the Duch ess once she got on the beam. "I attended the stockholders' meeting at the store this morn ing'' the Duchess said firmly. "You should have been there. They sent out a call for you, but no one could find you. All the officers were re-elected and a new vice-president and gen eral merchandise manager nam ,ed." "They'd have to do that. White has gone into the navy. They have to have a man to fill his place." Suddenly the Duchess drop ped her knitting and leaned for ward, with a single eager ges iure. When she spoke there was an overtone of excitement in her voice that vaguely bothered him. "I want to be the first to con gratulate you, Christopher. They elected you first vice-president By Gene I I 1 I I - 1 I . 'Hi. SJJ 1 I PiNMEAP: JT SAVED EVER V WHAT M V I'LL SMOVJ S THERE- VAdt. I have hoped for this for a long, long time." ' "Me they elected Me gen eral merchandise manager " Christopher started at her in blank amazement. "Why that's impossible!" Sheer incredulity crowded out every other con sideration, as he looked al her in bewildered silence. The thiing was unreal, fantastic. They never put young men in a posi tion like that, and he was just twenty-six. At last he said in .a low voice, "I can't qualify for a position like that." "You qualified all right with the stockholders," the Duchess Vejoined calmly. For the first time that eve ning, Christopher smiled. His aunt was one of the store's lar gest stockholders. So her "hopes" had probably been a deciding factor in the surprising and unprecedented action taken that morning. "But my dear Duchess." Chris topher insisted. "I am thinking of the hard boiled gentlemen on our board. They'd never vote a dollar for anything without a written guarantee of five com ing back! No, it's all cock-eyed. It doesn't make sense. Besides," he added more soberly, as he saw the worried look on his ACROSS 1. Resembling a liorse 7. Golf club lr,. Took care of 14. Infuriate 15. Set out on a voyape 16. Lonp narrow inlet 17. He eyed her levelly for a mo ment, then he added quickly. "I think a store is the dullest place in the world. It doesn't interest me in the least. Nothing of any importance ever happens in a store people just go on and on, mechanically, all the days of their life. Work: get old; and then take their pen sions. Nothing ever happens in a store. Duchess, and that's the God's truth. I'll have none of it." "They need you at the store. Christopher. They want your young ideas, and Humbert man agement ' again. You'll do all right. Boy." The old eyes mist ed suddenly. "At the rate people try to chart my existence around this town because my name hap pens to be Humbert, they leave me only one choice and that is to get away from it all." Christopher ran his hands im patiently through his thick brown hair, then tossed back his head defiantly with a quick gesture that make the Duchess catch her breath shaply. She had seen her father do exactly the same thing whenever he was puzzled or very intent on making one of his famous light ning decisions. Then Christo pher jammed his hands deep ino his pockets, and leaning against the side of the doorway, chanted solemnly: "D u t y, obligation, success, perseverance, patience, making my time count. Good Lord! Pause for station identification, it's Grandfather speaking! With a world on fire, I'm supposed to stay home and join the counter hoppers no dice, Duchess! I'm going where things happen and happen fast and I'm on my way now!" The telephone on the library table filled the room with its sudden, insistent ring. It rang three times before Christopher could get across the library to answer it. "Mr. Humbert," a vibrant feminine voice, low and urgent, came over the wire. "This is Brenda Blair speaking. That shipment of mink expected in furs today has been lost in the store. I thought you might be able to help me locate it."
