ing back! No, it's all cock-eyed.

he added more soberly, as he

Christopher ran his hands im
patiently through his thick
brown hair, then tossed back
his head defiantly with a quick
gesture that make the Duchess
catch her breath shaply. She
had seen her father do exactly
the same thing whenever he
was puzzled or very intent on
making one of his famous light
ning decisions. Then Christo
pher jammed his hands deep
ino his pockets, and leaning
against the side of the doorway,
chanted solemnly:
"D u t y, obligation, success,
perseverance, patience, making
my time count. Good Lord!
Pause for station identification,
it's Grandfather speaking! With
a world on fire, I'm supposed to
stay home and join the counter
hoppers no dice, Duchess! I'm
going where things happen
and happen fast and I'm on my
way now!"
The telephone on the library
table filled the room with its
sudden, insistent ring. It rang
three times before Christopher
could get across the library to
answer it.
"Mr. Humbert," a vibrant
feminine voice, low and urgent,
came over the wire. "This is
Brenda Blair speaking. That
shipment of mink expected in
furs today has been lost in the
store. I thought you might be
able to help me locate it."
