J, WATtCINS I WRIGHT 11 "' ;--iS 'Chapter 12 DieM Lavinia groaned inwardly. "Two hours." It teemed like an 'fciternity. But ehe gritted her teth, figuratively, and picked HP her cardi. She went at it with '' 11 she had and that, alas, was pretty bad. And she knew then that i the '.two hour period seemed like an eternity to her, it must seem like perfect cons to Mr, and Mrs. Masters, It was an experience he would never forget and ' one which Mr. and Mrs. Masters would probably look back upon . In sheer agony. Then, out of the darkness of the fearful experience, came a .voice. It announced that the bridge playing period was at an t.nd, and the scores from the , tables would be gathered up and llgured. "I needn't ask what table got ithe lowest score," said Mrs. .Masters with poorly concealed bitterness. , . Lavinia felt like something r.ainking Into a dark hole and she almost fell upon Margol's neck i when she came over to the table. "Come on, Miss Prentiss," she i said. "I'll introduce you to some of the young men now that dancing Is going to start." ' "Thank you," said Lavinia. She said good-bye to the others, - (ud followed Margot serous the ballroom. Mr, and Mrs. Masters watch ed her. "If she doesn't dance any 'better than she plays bridge," aald Mrs. Masters, "heaven help her partners." "They'll probably hnve In visit chiropodists tomorrow," (aid Mr. Masters, Margot Introduced Lnvlnln In h tall, dark young man, whose black hair shone like patent lon , ther, and Lavinia felt her cour- age fast ebbing away, The man was a typical dancing man if , ever there was nnel And she was rlghl. He danced pnrfocty and he did his best Willi her. But, pei'ect as lie was its n .dancer, lie couldn't seem to keep . In step with the music, not when Lavinia didn't co-operate. , But, as In the case with the bridge, she grilled her tool li , (nd gave the dancing all (hat she ' had, which was even worse I han What she had given the bridge. "Sorry!" said the young man ts they got out of step for the teenth lime. "My fault," said Lavinia gen erously. "No, mine," "Let's not argue the point!" Lavinia laughed hollowly, 'did then the laugh froze as she saw her partner signalling. She wanted to scream, she want ed to slap the man's face, she wanted to run off and hide her own face. But there was no time for any of those things she wanted to do, for the man signalled was evi dently a friend as well as a hero. He came forward, knowing full well probably just what he was getting himself into, and bravely rescued the slick-hcadod danc ing man who wns stuck, "May I?" he said, smiling at Lavinia. "Why, of course!" asitl La vinia, also smiling and re membering scenes she had watched in the movies. She moved off with her new partner. It was worse thnn be fore. "Sorry!" "My fnult!" "No, mine!" "Well, you've done your res cuing act," said Lavinia with for ced lightness. "And now you're free." She turned, and hurried away. The Dud Making her way in and out among the dancers, Lavinia reached the bridge table. There she caught up the short velvet jacket that went with the crim son chiffon evening gown, and slipped it about her shoulders, This done, she went out through a French window which open ed upon the wide vornndn. She stood n moment, undecided and thnn walked down to the for end, found n hlgh-bnckod chnlr, and dropped down Into It strangely wenry, oddly do. pressed. "Funny," said the girl, "that anyone who looks like a million dollars In n beautiful chiffon gown could he such a flop on n dance floor." "Funny?" said the man. He laughed mirthlessly. "You wouldn't think so If you tried dancing with her. If she atumlv led over my feet once, she did It a dozen times." "You should have been more agile and kept your feet out of her way." "No human being could bo thRt agile. Her feet seemed to be everywhere at once." The man sighed. "And do you know what happened?" "Not the slightest idea!" "That sour-faced Mr. Masters I'LL GO WITH NOU LET'S MAKE IT A COMMANDO PERFORMANCE.1 i v J 1 T Vn came up to me, held out his hand, and said, "You have my sympathy. I just had her for a bridge partner." "Poor girl!" "I asked Miss Linden about hcr-4-and understand she's quite Important in a big New York department store. I gather she's devoted her time to busi ness and let social accomp lishments go hang. Well, how about another dance?" "I'd love It!" The couple moved off. La vinia sat perfectly still, hold ing her breath. She knew noifc that eavesdroppers didn't hear any good of themselves, even when they eavesdropped unin tentionally. So that was what people thought of her! They even condoled with each oth er. They mopped their brows and breathed great sighs of re lief when she was out of the picture. She got up, thinking: "I'd belter go somewhere else be fore I hear some more revealing things about myself." (To be Continued) Radio Programs Saturday Program KHIiM IJIlru Kilocycle Saturday, p.
