Waldespel of Salem sus tained a broken hip and bruises about the face and head when he was run down by a car driven by W. B. Holcoinb of 2020 Norm Capitol street at 5:30 o'clock yes terday afternoon. The accident occurred just north of the bridge crossing Mill Creek on North Capitol street. Tho front nnd back right wheels of the car ran over Waldespel, and he was stretched out on the pavement with his head against the curb. Waldespel was returning home from work at the local paper mill, he stated today, when the acci dent occurred. He claims that there was an arc light near the scene of the accident. Holcomb reported to the police that he could not see WaMespcl due to the darkness. Waldespel was resting easily at the Willamette Sanitarium today. A charge of driving an auto mobile while Intoxicated has been pending against Waldespel in po lico court for several weeks, and the hearing for various reasons baa been postponed from time to time, usually because of the ab sence of witnesses from the city. The accident with which Wa!dos- nel met last night, according to his attorney, will keep him con fined for several weeks and will make necessary a further post ponement of the bearing. S! (AP) Angered becauso his bride of 17 months would not help him solve cross word puzzle, Theodore Koorner, an ardent devotee ot the pastime, seriously wounded her and killed himself. Koerner last night asked Mrs. Koorner for holp In solving a par. ticulnrly difficult combination of letters. "I have a head ache," she re Plied. "I think I'll go and lie down." A moment, later as she was In the bedroom of their apartment Koerner appeared at the door with a pistol in his hand. He fired without speaking and the bullet struck Mrs. Koerner in the right temple. As she fled Koerner fired another shot at her, which miss ed its targot, and then turned the pistol on himself. He had had two nervous breakdowns since summer and was on sick leave from his work. IS (Special) Loggers of the Silver Falls Tim ber company camps came out for the winter months today. The mill will close down for Its an nual clean-up on December 23 and remain down until January 4th. All departments are closing this year. The shut down is about two weeks shorter this year than in former years. Each of these requests is being carefully considered, and the names ot worthy children will be supplied as soon as the listing ot needy cases can be completed.
