A Jnnitor dusting the walls in

caused a burglar alarm to be ac
cidentally touched off, and as a

force on duty swarmed about the

mobile with friends. He expects to

C. G. Waldespel of Salem sus
tained a broken hip and bruises
about the face and head when he
was run down by a car driven by
W. B. Holcoinb of 2020 Norm
Capitol street at 5:30 o'clock yes
terday afternoon. The accident
occurred just north of the bridge
crossing Mill Creek on North
Capitol street. Tho front nnd
back right wheels of the car ran
over Waldespel, and he was
stretched out on the pavement
with his head against the curb.
Waldespel was returning home
from work at the local paper mill,
he stated today, when the acci
dent occurred. He claims that
there was an arc light near the
scene of the accident. Holcomb
reported to the police that he
could not see WaMespcl due to
the darkness.
Waldespel was resting easily at
the Willamette Sanitarium today.
A charge of driving an auto
mobile while Intoxicated has been
pending against Waldespel in po
lico court for several weeks, and
the hearing for various reasons
baa been postponed from time to
time, usually because of the ab
sence of witnesses from the city.
The accident with which Wa!dos-
nel met last night, according to
his attorney, will keep him con
fined for several weeks and will
make necessary a further post
ponement of the bearing.

her and killed himself.
Koerner last night asked Mrs.
Koorner for holp In solving a par.
ticulnrly difficult combination of
letters.
"I have a head ache," she re
Plied. "I think I'll go and lie
down."
A moment, later as she was In
the bedroom of their apartment
Koerner appeared at the door
with a pistol in his hand. He fired
without speaking and the bullet
struck Mrs. Koerner in the right
temple. As she fled Koerner fired
another shot at her, which miss
ed its targot, and then turned
the pistol on himself. He had had
two nervous breakdowns since
summer and was on sick leave
from his work.

At the regular meeting of the
Elks last night between 30 and
40 volunteers responded to tho
call for workers to comb the city
high and low for kiddies who
might otherwise be forgotten by
Old St. Nick. Sunday morning
they will start on their search at
10 o'clock from the Elks temple,
running down every clue they can
uncover. By nightfall they hopo
to have every needy child In the
city catalogued.

the things these children need
and want, and Wednesday night
the packagos will be made up and
addressed for Santa, all ready to
bo doilvored Thursday night.
To make up these packagoB al
most an unlimited variety of ar
ticles are needed dolls and
books, toys and more toys, allocs
and warm clothing, fruits and
nuts and candy, and all ot the
ftxln'fl that go into the Christmas
dinners which must not be forgot
ten. . Many of these artlc-es are
being donated directly and dcliv
ored at the Elks temple, but not
nearly onough.
A good share of them will have
to be purchased, and that tak
money a lot more than has yet
been forthcoming. If your con
trlbutlon Is not in yet just mall
It to the Capital Journal, or bring
it in.
One gratifying thing about the
committee's plea for help has
been the generous response of
persons who wish to take over
and care for entire families ot
children. Fully a dozen requests
tor the names of kiddles to whom
they can play Santa Clous per-
sonally have been received from
individuals and organizations.
Each of these requests is being
carefully considered, and the
names ot worthy children will be
supplied as soon as the listing ot
needy cases can be completed.
One woman, who asks that her
name be withheld, has several
sets ot mechanical building toys
she would liko to give to little
crippled boys, and a small hand
sewing machlno for a crippled
girl to enjoy, and the committee
Is busy trying to locate- the boys
and girls for her,
