Slowly diminishing' through subterrane an channel, waters ot Crater lake, 1300 feet from the Moffat tunnel, on the crest ot the con tinentsl dirfde. are leaking Into the great railroad bore, it has been officially and scientifically determined, according to autaorl' tics. The seepage which began thru the rock seam In tbe eastern por tal of the tunnel February 14, at the rate ot 00 gallons minute has dwindled to about X60 gal lons a mlnut and the lake today Is aearly empty. This phenomena has been with out detriment to workens build ing tbe six mile tunnel through the heart of th Rocky mountains to prorids taster transcontinental rail connections despite nature's own barrier in the expansire mountain range. The flow ot water into the tunnel was at first believed by workmen to hare been caused by striking an underground reser voir. Since February 19 officials employed scientific analysis with the result that chloride ot lime poured Into the lake has seeped its way into the tunnel. Crater lake lies In a region covered with snow from 30 to 40 feet deep, and steps must be tak en, according to officials to stop the leaks before the ODrlns thaw, lest the onrush ot Crater lake's supply should too- rspidly engulf lite bore, wuers several bundred workmen are engaged oa the project. fc LIVESLEY 'Llvealey, Or., March I.
