Allan Jones, member of company M, who start ed the ball rolling, received a let ter from Paris yesterday thanking him for what he had started. "He thanked me for the numer ous corresopndents he bad re ceived," said Jones. " Said he got a letter from a Salem high school girl the day ho wrote." it originally started In a music store In the town of ltochefort, France, on the Bay of Biscay. I Rochefort was a base port tor the A. E. F. Tommy Coatee and Allan Jones, both of Salem, were play ing the piano In the store, which was owned by the elder Huot, ma rine commissioner. The two Americans from Salem attracted the attention of the commissioner, who Invited them upstairs. Jones' acquaintance with the family. In cluding young Robert Huot, who was then 7 years old, began at that time. Among other things Robert learned to sing "Hall, Hail, the Gang's All Here." Last Christmas Jones sent a Christmas card to Robert. It met with a prompt rvpry, written In English. "I am now grown up," wrote Robert, "and going to school In Paris. Can you not send me the name of someone of my own age with whom I may corre spond?" Jones reported the letter to J. C. Nelson, principal of the high school, who epoke about It to the French department of the scbool. The result was that several mem bers of the French IV class, taught by Miss Chrlstensen. wrote to Paris. Up until this morning, re plies had not been received, the letter to Jones being the only In dication that the letters from Sa lem bad arrived. Robert Indicated . that he was much surprised to find that boys and girls go t(Ube same schools In America. They don't allow tbem to do that way In France, he says. Incidentally arrangements are under way to have an entire French class, taught by Miss Townsend, correspond with a class somewhere in France. Each class member will write In hie own na tive tongue, leaving it to the stu dent at the other end to do the translating. The correspondence by Mies Townsend's class Is to be done through a bureau In the eastern part of the United States.
