Wallowa County Chieftain wallowa.com Community July 13, 2016 A9 Makin to unveil stagecoach rebuild at CJD 100 YEARS AGO July 13, 1916 OUT OF THE PAST • One of the landmarks (the old McCully store) of Wallowa county is now being razed be- cause it stands in the way of the steady march of improvement. Portions of the old buildings are being torn down while re- maining parts are to be moved into the streets where they will remain in use until the new modern structure of the McCul- ly Mercantile Co. at Joseph is ready for occupancy. The 2-sto- ry part of the building was erect- ed in 1882 and was at that time the largest store room this side of La Grande. • Fifteen farmers on the road to the Buttes have organized the O.K. Telephone association and are putting in a new line which runs into the Enterprise ex- change. They have 24 miles of wire. This will be strung on the poles of the Home Independent telephone company’s Imnaha line, going out as far as the top of the East Crow Creek. • The city is about ready to begin an extensive, permanent improvement in River street from the courthouse square to the railroad track. The gravel from the excavation of E.M. & M. Company’s new store is to be put on the street. This will build a roadway that will be smooth at all times and proof against spring mud. • The irst women to make the climb to Aneroid lake this season went up last week in what probably was the irst par- ty of the year. The program will consist of vaudeville acts, readings and in- strumental and vocal music. 70 YEARS AGO July 18, 1946 • Three charter members of the Paradise Neighborhood club now living in Enterprise, went in last Thursday to help celebrate the 11th anniversary of the club. 22 ladies and children were present and enjoyed the bounte- ous potluck dinner. These ladies did outstanding work during the war for the Red Cross and along other welfare lines. They own their own club house and meet regularly. Mrs. Harold Kuhn is the president. • Haying season is in full swing. The weather has been quite unfavorable and most peo- ple are a little short of help again this season. The crop is quite good. • News from Alder Slope: This was “truck accident” week on the Slope but we were fortu- nate not to have anyone injured. Sunday one of the lime kiln trucks ran in the ditch at the ish hatchery corner. Tuesday Mr. Lively slid the cream truck off the road on the Edward Kenealy lane. Tuesday night another lime kiln truck driven by Raymond Bork upset on the corner be- low the Gene Sasser home. On Wednesday night a lime truck driven by Everett Bork crashed over the fence into the ield on the Willber Homan farm. 50 YEARS AGO July 14, 1966 • Oscar Maxwell, 78-year- old rancher and stockman of Lostine, has been named the 5:48 p.m.: Medic alert requesting an ambulance in Enterprise. 5:56 p.m.: Trafic stop in Enterprise. Citation issued. 7:15 p.m.: EPD arrested Jacob Michael Ellis, 26, of En- terprise on charges of probation violation. Ellis was transported to Umatilla County Jail. 7:35 p.m.: Contacted about a missing person in the wilderness who was located soon after contacting our ofice. 11:05 p.m.: 911 call for an ambulance in Enterprise. At this point the two sharp curves which form the “S” at the railroad crossing are being replaced with two sweeping curves and a new bridge. • News from Imnaha: Mr. Duckett took Mr. Killough out to the doctor Wednesday to have a ish hook removed from his inger.
