Makin to unveil stagecoach rebuild at CJD
100 YEARS AGO
July 13, 1916
OUT OF THE PAST
• One of the landmarks (the
old McCully store) of Wallowa
county is now being razed be-
cause it stands in the way of the
steady march of improvement.
Portions of the old buildings
are being torn down while re-
maining parts are to be moved
into the streets where they will
remain in use until the new
modern structure of the McCul-
ly Mercantile Co. at Joseph is
ready for occupancy. The 2-sto-
ry part of the building was erect-
ed in 1882 and was at that time
the largest store room this side
of La Grande.
• Fifteen farmers on the road
to the Buttes have organized the
O.K. Telephone association and
are putting in a new line which
runs into the Enterprise ex-
change. They have 24 miles of
wire. This will be strung on the
poles of the Home Independent
telephone company’s Imnaha
line, going out as far as the top
of the East Crow Creek.
• The city is about ready to
begin an extensive, permanent
improvement in River street
from the courthouse square to
the railroad track. The gravel
from the excavation of E.M. &
M. Company’s new store is to
be put on the street. This will
build a roadway that will be
smooth at all times and proof
against spring mud.
• The irst women to make
the climb to Aneroid lake this
season went up last week in
what probably was the irst par-
ty of the year. They crossed over
snow banks 25-feet deep on up-
per parts of the trail and the foot-
ing was soft and slippery.
• The show to be given by
the Knights of Pythias and the
Enterprise band will be pro-
duced in the opera house July
