Getting off his bike, he sprawled out on the warm pavement near Tamástslikt Cultural Institute. Soaking in the moment, Filkins said others approached him to find out if he was OK. “I went from a novice rider, where a 10-mile ride (with a long break in the middle) was a good ride,” he said. Called the Wheatfield Loop, Saturday’s partici- pants had a choice between a 34-mile or 55-mile ride — both taking riders past a number of century farms. Sunday’s options included the Century Route (100 miles) or a 58-mile ride. And, Monday featured the Cabbage Hill Challenge. Referred to as The CROC Classic, organizers extol the amazing views — making the climb worthy of every turn of the pedal on the way up. For those not up to the challenge, there’s a shorter out and back route from Deadman Pass to Meacham. The first CROC was held in 2003. It came two years after Pendleton hosted the Northwest Tandem Rally. The Pendleton Chamber of Commerce wanted to promote a local bicycling event that would highlight the importance of agriculture CBS Known for its outra- geously fun rest stops, the Century Ride of the Centu- ries — AKA the CROC — still offers a challenge for seasoned cyclists. Referring to herself as the “Head CROC-a-roo,” Nikki Murtaugh said both short and long routes are offered each day of the Memorial Day weekend event. “We try to create routes that are relatively traffic free, which is greatly appre- ciated by riders from the I-5 corridor,” she said. “Each ride takes you on a country journey up and down the rolling hills of green wheat fields prevalent this time of year. It’s beautiful,” is how Pendleton on Wheels describes the event. In its 15th year, the CROC serves as a fundraiser for Pend- leton on Wheels. The bicycle enthusiasts provide grants to programs and organizations that benefit area youths. The event’s distinguishing feature, Chuck Wood said, has quickly become the “wild and crazy” rest stops. With themes including everything from White Trash and Medieval Times to Okto- berfest and Hawaiian Pirates, taking a break features more than merely re-fueling. Touted as a ride that’s perfect for everyone from novice cyclists to veteran pedalers, David Filkins geared up for his first century ride several years ago. The Pendleton man shared about his experience leading up to the momentous occasion in this year’s La Gazetta dello CROC, an event newsletter that includes the schedule, daily weather reports, route information and emergency phone numbers. When riding, Filkins said once he’s in the saddle, he usually doesn’t stop. However, he tarried at the rest stops. And, that’s when he learned about camaraderie of the CROC. “At every stop, there were delicious snacks and other riders,” he said. “All the other riders knew that it was 11 KPTV 3 (19) KEPR 2 KOIN 19 (25) KNDU 6 KGW 8 (42) KVEW 4 KATU 5 (11) KFFX 12 AM 12:30 :05 Friends :35 Hot In 1 AM 1:30 2 AM 2:30 3 AM 3:30 :05 CR TV 2 Broke G.
