MIND’S EYE PORTRAITS ARLEN CLARK, INSTRUCTOR LANDSCAPE PAINTING NIKA BLASSER, INSTRUCTOR Arlen will share his unique approach to painting portraits, using lots of color and making up the composition as you go. Students’ resulting pieces will be fun, loose and expressive portraits or self-portraits. This class will focus on how to express mood and feelings through use of color, exaggeration and distortion. We’ll focus on narrative and symbolism rather than traditional painting techniques, although a certain amount of that will be covered too. Students with all levels of painting experience are welcome to attend. Work in layers to build an acrylic landscape painting from your favorite photo or picture. The first class will focus on a quick study painting with everyone working from the same image, and from there each person will choose and reproduce their own image (students can bring in a picture or pick one from the PCA’s library of master paintings!) We’ll practice mixing colors, “seeing” light and shadows, and using brushwork to create texture. No painting experience is necessary, this will be a fun class to explore landscape painting for any skill level. Supplies include brushes, acrylic paint and a high-quality 16 X 20 canvas. Or one that you use, but don’t really understand? Join Bill Peal, Camera Demystifier, to learn easy techniques for getting more out of your camera. He’ll show you everything from how to set the date to how to use macro focus to get beautiful flower photos. You’ll leave with confidence in your ability to take great photos. Fancy cameras not necessary! Bring your camera with the batteries fully charged and your manual with you to the first class THURSDAYS, 6:00-8:00 PM, JUNE 22 – JULY 13 (4 SESSIONS) $60 MEMBERS/ $65 NON-MEMBERS WEYĪILETPUU LANGUAGE WORKSHOP KRISTIN PARR, INSTRUCTOR There are three languages associated with the Confederated Tribes; Weyīiletpuu is one of them. A dialect of Cayuse and Nez Perce, it is a language specific to Native Americans of this region. Kristin will share the history of the language as well as teach spoken phrases and pronunciation. On the second day participants are invited to bring English words or phrases and get help translating them into Weyīiletpuu (bring a phone or recording device!) References and handouts will be provided, and we’ll also work with the Umatilla Dictionary, which has translations for several dialects. For interested participants, copies of the dictionary will be available for $50.00 and can be purchased directly from Kristen.
