President llardiiiR's veto of tho bonus bill was believed to be re sponsible for the early strength in war issues of our own government, the liberty 3 l-2s jumping 24 points to a new high, hut slipping back later when word came that the house hud passed the bill over the presi dent's veto. Other issue registered only nominal gains, the fourth 4 1-4S being particularly active. Total board sales, par value, were fl2,- 921,000, Pool operations In special stocks, several of which were pushing up to new high records for the year, pro vided the only interesting feature In today's relatively quiet .stock mar ket session, prices in which were mainly upward. Far mers havins wood lots are enjoying unexpected prosperity these days, due to the coal shortage caused by the long coal strike in the American an thracite and bituminous fields. Trices of cord wood, cut to four foot lengths, have gone up $3 per cord, and farm ers are finding trouble getting suffi cient hely to supply the demand. The old price was $8 per cord, which, ac cording to many producers, showed a fair profit. It Is reported that residents of Mon treal and other Canadian cities, fear ing inability to get coal to keep warm during the severe Canadian winter, are laying In largo supplies of the fuel.
