IS HAITI BETTER THAN CANADA? 01 UFA, Haiti. Fanama, Chile, Brazil, Argentine and a host of other small South American and Central American ill have votes in the Leasrue of Nations as sembly. All told there will be 17 such ytvtes that will normally be under the moral leadership of Uncle Sam. The situation will make the United States the most powerful single factor in the assembly. Working in a fair cause we should be able to control the assembly if we wish to do so or need to do so. Then why worry over the fact the big English colonies will also be represented in the assembly? Is not Canada as much entitled to a delegate as Haiti or Panama? Is not Australia? Are those big empires to be snubbed for the brave part they played in winning the war? Shall we allow Liberia and Hon duras and all the other small fry republics to vote, yet bar our rortbern neighbor? The idea is ridiculous, particularly so since the assembly is but a debating society and the actual gathering rests with the council wherein all the big powers will have but one yote each and decisions must be hy unanimous vote. The Lenroot resolution is but another effort to kill the League of Nations by indirect methods. Great Britain would never consent to heap such humiliation on her colonies and the people of the United States do not desire to see such action ta ken. If the Lodge forces are not ready to accept the treaty with out the Lenroot resolution they are not for the treaty at all. They are against it and should frankly say so. AN OLD STORY NOW i i .. If you are not feeling well take ltJ care of yourself. A cold is pn easy thing to handle if you take after it properly. There is no occasion for any alarm simply because a few people have colds. There are seasons every year when colds become common. The damage last year was due to "40 per cent flu and 60 per cent fright," in the view of many people. Since it is hard for people to get scared twice by the same ghost story, all should be well this time. A WONDERFUL RECORD ITH fewer commercial reverses in the United States than in any year since 1881, when the total number of & firms in business was less than half the number now in existence, the 1919 insolvency statement has contributed largely to an annual statistical exhibit that has had no parallel, says the Washington Star's financial expert. The industrial and mer cantile repression of the early part of last year, which was a time of readjustment, uncertainty and hesitation, was not sufficiently aevere or protracted to make itself manifest in the failure com parison, and only 6451 defaults were reported to R. G. Dunn & Co. during the twelve months recently ended. The significance of this showing is demonstrated by the fact that in 1918, when the returns wer3 considered highly favorable, ! there were 9981 insolvencies and the $113,291,237 of liabilities ! of 1919 not only contract sharply with the $163,019,979 of the j yfar immediately preceding, but are the smallest since 1905. It thus appears that last year, instead of disclosing the rise in the commercial mortality, which many people had expected, brought a further reduction of 35.4 per cent in number of fail ures, and a contraction of 30.5 per cent in the indebtedness, while the improvement over the early years of the war era is, of course, far more striking. Admiral Sims may be right about some of those naval dec orations. But the important fact about the navy is that it con voyed our soldiers overesas and back without losing a single transport. The Tuscania was guarded by English destroyers when sunk. Had the Sims view prevailed we might have lost more ships and men for he wanted to use our destroyers in Eu ropean waters, rather than as convoys. ' The fury of the elements never ean disturb the resting place of those who sleep within these marble tombs. Neither can they be desecrated by man. Tender, eternal care is their portion.
