IS HAITI BETTER THAN CANADA?
01
UFA, Haiti. Fanama, Chile, Brazil, Argentine and a host
of other small South American and Central American
ill have votes in the Leasrue of Nations as
sembly. All told there will be 17 such ytvtes that will normally
be under the moral leadership of Uncle Sam. The situation will
make the United States the most powerful single factor in the
assembly. Working in a fair cause we should be able to control
the assembly if we wish to do so or need to do so.
Then why worry over the fact the big English colonies will
also be represented in the assembly? Is not Canada as much
entitled to a delegate as Haiti or Panama? Is not Australia?
Are those big empires to be snubbed for the brave part they
played in winning the war? Shall we allow Liberia and Hon
duras and all the other small fry republics to vote, yet bar our
rortbern neighbor? The idea is ridiculous, particularly so since
the assembly is but a debating society and the actual gathering
rests with the council wherein all the big powers will have but
one yote each and decisions must be hy unanimous vote.
The Lenroot resolution is but another effort to kill the
League of Nations by indirect methods. Great Britain would
never consent to heap such humiliation on her colonies and the
people of the United States do not desire to see such action ta
ken. If the Lodge forces are not ready to accept the treaty with
out the Lenroot resolution they are not for the treaty at all. They
are against it and should frankly say so.

JM ONT worry about the Flu. If you are not feeling well take
ltJ care of yourself. A cold is pn easy thing to handle if you
take after it properly. There is no occasion for any alarm
simply because a few people have colds. There are seasons
every year when colds become common. The damage last year
was due to "40 per cent flu and 60 per cent fright," in the view
of many people. Since it is hard for people to get scared twice
by the same ghost story, all should be well this time.
A WONDERFUL RECORD
ITH fewer commercial reverses in the United States
than in any year since 1881, when the total number of
& firms in business was less than half the number now in
existence, the 1919 insolvency statement has contributed largely
to an annual statistical exhibit that has had no parallel, says the
Washington Star's financial expert. The industrial and mer
cantile repression of the early part of last year, which was a time
of readjustment, uncertainty and hesitation, was not sufficiently
aevere or protracted to make itself manifest in the failure com
parison, and only 6451 defaults were reported to R. G. Dunn &
Co. during the twelve months recently ended.
The significance of this showing is demonstrated by the fact
that in 1918, when the returns wer3 considered highly favorable, !
there were 9981 insolvencies and the $113,291,237 of liabilities !
of 1919 not only contract sharply with the $163,019,979 of the j
yfar immediately preceding, but are the smallest since 1905. It
thus appears that last year, instead of disclosing the rise in the
commercial mortality, which many people had expected,
brought a further reduction of 35.4 per cent in number of fail
ures, and a contraction of 30.5 per cent in the indebtedness,
while the improvement over the early years of the war era is, of
course, far more striking.
Admiral Sims may be right about some of those naval dec
orations. But the important fact about the navy is that it con
voyed our soldiers overesas and back without losing a single
transport. The Tuscania was guarded by English destroyers
when sunk. Had the Sims view prevailed we might have lost
more ships and men for he wanted to use our destroyers in Eu
ropean waters, rather than as convoys.
A Denver man who supports a family of five on $2334 per
annum allows $40 a year for Insurance. He is not carrying
enough insurance for a family of five. '
The fury of the elements never ean disturb the
resting place of those who sleep within these
marble tombs. Neither can they be desecrated
by man. Tender, eternal care is their portion.
The living, too, find in the rich furnishings of the
Mausoleum solace and comforting shelter, when
memories move them to visit this beautiful abid
ing place of their beloved dead.
The Portland Mausoleum Company is now selling the
second unit to Olney Abbey Mausoleum.

HAVE YOU SCROFULA? L
Tuesday, August 20. Have packed
all necessary things in my bed-roll, so
It is very fat and heavy. My trunk
with the rest I am checking with the
American Kxpress Co. "till we meet
again." This morning as I returned
from breakfast I saw a very familiar
sight in France. The priest, a hearse,
soldiers In arms accompanying with !
just three elderly women in crepe be

vastation, death, vacant homes, wid-
ows, orphans." My very first letter j
from the children since I left N. Y. i
came today. The very day before I I
leave for the front where I know It
Mil t,e many days before any mall I
reaches me.
Oh joy! One can never realize what
a letter means till he gets it under cir
custances like this. I don't wonder
that the soldicrM long for letters from
their sweethearts, wives, mothers, chll- (
dren and "folks" In general. Now I
know exactly how it feels for i nave t
got the feeling." If every letter I
get makes me feel as happy and strong
to do things as tnis one cioes.i ieei

wild cats, and paint whole townslps

a full Job and days work. Just so my

so affects every khaki clad man, then
the son of every Oerman mother netter ,
pray thatjhey he not written. Have
paid my. hotel bill and "tipped" every
body about this hotel from cellnr to
garret who has ever done anything
for me, or given me a smile. Ieft an
order for an early call so I feel like I
was ready for another move and this
time toward the' front and Berlin.
