The cross of the I-cgion of Honor was conferred upon a twenty-one year old Alsacian by the name of Alt as the result of a most remarkabe career in the French ar my, prompted solely by his great de sire to see his native province of Al sace reunited to France. Alt's ser vices in the Alsacian cause have now been cut short' by the loss of one lesr. Although the cross . of the Legion o Honor ts designed to recompense him in part for this, he declares the re. compenee thRt alone will satisfy him will be the ultimate return of Alsace to France. Alt has been from his boyhood, one of the most ardent champions of the Alsacian cause. When the war broke out he was at Tout. Although only Id years of age then, he enlist ed In the French Foreign legion and made the campaiim on the Yser With twenty-seven wounds In his body, he was left on the Belgian bat tlefield for dead, but was later pick ed up and taken to a hospital. The doctors declare that It was his etermlnation to get well and keep on fighting for Alsace that pulled him through. Hardly was he out of the hnspitft! before he was bnck in the French ranks demanding to be as. signed to the most perilous tasks. Alt had been serving for some time as an observer In a large tree far in advance of the French lines. Even tually the tree fell under suspicion of the nermann and they at once surrounded it with a barrage fire that made escape practically Impos sible. The Oermans directed shell nfter shell at the tree, until one struck it squarely and felled It to the ground. In the fall. Alt received wounds that made It Impossible for him to flee. From nine in the morn ing until midnight Alt lav on the ground, hoping almost against hop"- At midnight, the barrage ceased and a German sergeant and two sol diers crept out of their trenches to take Alt prisoner. He drew his re volver. waited till they were close, and shot all three. French comrades reached the wounded Alsacian and carried him back to their lines. The Legion of Honor was conferred on Alt at the hospital where he is re covering from the amputation of his leg. BeautifuljCar inlmcrica A Word of Warning As long' as the Paige-Detroit Motor Car Company' pres ent supply of materials lasts, Paige buyers will enjoy the advantage of the present Paige pnee. . It is estimated that this supply of materials will last ap proximately 60 or 90 days and when the supply is ex hausted it will, obviously, again be necessary to read just the prices of all models of the Paige line. Then, as now, the Paige prices will be fixed in proportion to the cost of materials. They are never raised arbi trarily. That is a point on price we wish to emphasize. But when the last word on price is said you will continue to select the Paige because of its mechanical excel lence, its beauty, its supreme quality. Stratford "Six-51" 7-passengr'.i......$1595 f. o.
