But there is reason for this action. Our direct reasons for being at war are found: In the policy of the German utocracv in sinking our ships rn fbp high seas, unarmed and crew a chance to escape. In resuming such a policy of ruthlessness after having offi cially informed our government such work would not be done. In plotting to destroy indus tries and kill American citizens in this 'country when we were at peace with Germany and de sired to so remain. In plotting by chicanery and falsehood to get Mexico and Japan to invade our peaceful western states and by holding out a promise of American ter4 ntorv for the invaders. Indirectly we have occasion for war because of the - cold blooded invasion of Belgium in defiance of treaty and the de---poilation of that land. There is cause of war in the slaugh ter of innocent Belgian civilians and the cruel, inhuman maim- inc of little children. We have direct cause fcr war in the fact that if we do not aid now in the overthrow of kaiserism the time will come when single handed we will have to face a foe that has already made the boast that he will make America pay tribute in the form of a huge mdem nitv to Berlin. The men drawn for service yesterday "are fortunate in that thev are selected to represent this country on the battlefield in a war for humanity and free dom. Let them face their obli gations with bold hearts and good cheer. There are many millions more ready to follow them when the time comes. THE MICHAELIS SPEECH Shews . Time in the Dark "RADIOLITE" (Rt&mm-Lifkui) Makes the Dial Glow Sngersoll has brought out a Ihanrurwus substance called ""RADIOLITE". The light giving power of "RADIO LITE" is genuine RADI UM in minute proportions. On the figures and hands of InzersoU watches this abstance glows in the dark more brilliantly than pure radium. And this glow con tinues as bright as ever for six to eight years. Quick as a glance on even the darkest night you can read the time with an Inger soO "Radiolite". German autocracv knows there can be no peace except on a basis of autocracy s downfall. Word to that effect has been served by the allied nations. J". . . . oris mat win maive xutuic Deace an assurance and experi ence shows that the peace of the world is not safe while the central powers are dominated 1 v a caste that places sole faith in militarism and is in spired by a philosophy under which no regard is shown for the rights of man or the laws of God. Knowing the nature of the allied goal the kaise has no course save to abdicate or fight to a finish. He will fight as long as he can. But there will be a lijriit to German endurance and a limit to Teutonic forbear ance in conducting a war that is not for the German people but or men who in truth are their oppressors. When that dav arrives William will be for tunate, if he does not find more formidable foes' at home than ! in the ring of allied soldiers , surrounding his empire. I It is significant that the Ger iman socialists do not approve of Michaelis. They realize that his policy is to win or Isink the ship. How long will ;they stand for such a com mander?
