The cleverness of Miss Mabel Carter, aged 15. 1521 Kennington avenue, enabled the police to capture two alleged mashers Sunday night. Miss Carter says she was stopped at Illinois and Market streets by two men who, after offering her popcon. Insisted on ac companying her to her home. She excused herself and walked across thv street to a telephone to call the po lice. She returned and talked to the men until bicycle policemen arrived. Irl Terry and Helen Linsner both of this place, were united In marriage at Pendleton Wednesday. Both young people are well known here. Miss Linsner has lived at Pilot Rock for a number of years, with her aunt, Mrs. E. Linsner. Mr. Terry has helped his father farm his ranch near Albee for a few years. The young couple have many friends who wish them much Joy In their married life. Mr. and Mrs. Irl Terry will make their home here. "Jinks" Jaques was a visitor at Pendleton Wednesday. James Whittaker and family of Nye, passed through here Thursday en their way to Pendleton to do some trading. Dewey Jaques was a visitor at the county seat Thursday. Paul Stanley, brother of Ward Stanley, arrived here from his home In Missouri Tuesday to visit his brother for few weeks. Frank Duff paid Pendleton a busi ness call Friday. Dec. 19 Consider able excitement has arisen In all parts of this county on account of the num ber of coyotes with rabbles that are biting dogs and cattle. The coyotes, when shot at, march right on toward the person shooting They go without apparent purpose, but ready to bite any living thing. They have no hesitation In entering cattle yards around the house or any part of the premises. People In the country are afraid to send their chil dren to school. Moratorium Is Extended. PARIS. Dec. 19. For the fourth time since the beginning of the war, the financial settlements have been postponed. The moratorium, apply ing to all negotiable securities dated before September and maturing before March 3, 1915, has been extended for two months. Dec. 21. Losses aggregating probably $45,000 were caused at Qreiham, 11 miles east of Portland, by fire early yesterday mor. nlng, when nine buildings In the bus! ness district on Main, between First and Second streets, were destroyed with the contents, covering a half block on each side of the street. The fire started at 3 o'clock In the store of the Bartlett Mercantile com pany. The origin has not been deter mined. The stocks carried In all the business places burned were wiped out. , Mr. Bartlett, who was sleeping on the second floor of the store, barely escaped suffocation. He was rescued ly Fleet Fox, a business man who leached Mm with a ladder. live Wires Fill Many Persons. T. R. Howltt was rendered uncon scious by coming In contact with a I've wire that had been burned In two by the flames. He was revived sever al hours later. Harold Kern and a fireman also were severely shocked by wires, and several others wers fhaken from a similar cause. The fallen strands charged the water from the hose lines with electricity and added to the difficulties of the fire men. A. E. Llndsey, a merchant, sleeping across the street from where the fire started, ran two blocks, barefoot and in his night clothes, to turn in an alarm.
