It Is a bargain counter lot that Is left now. Cupid will have to hustle d rid himself of these last few rem nants of the 10-rent counter. No more nights of hilarity, no more days of matchless luxury, no more euiseiie miracles, no more Incompar able 'smokers," no more rush orders for champagne, no more 23 and 40 cent cigars, no more midnight cabs, no more gay dinner parties ornament ed In rich wit and garnished with the matchless wisdom of bachelorhood no more, alas! The victory of Cupid has been over, whelming:. It would be cruel to pub lish the names of those remaining. In mercy they will be allowed to go their way in peace. And may a kind I providence follow the forlorn hope of i the Bachelors' club Into oblivion. Only Take up the white man's can non, The largest that ye cast. Go put it on your warships. Within less than a month the gates of the Umatilla-Morrow county dis trict fair will swing open. The pa vilion is being enlarged and modified to give more room for the exhibits and to better accommodate the crowds. What are you doing, personally, to help? Are you adding anything to it? Will it be better because you are a resident of the county? Will you be able to point to a solitary thing you have done to make the fair a success? These questions are directed to every individual farmer In the two great counties. It is for the farmers to say whether this fair Is to live or die; whether It is to be a successful, triumphant home event for our en joyment and education or a misera ble farce. The management is doing every thing posible to make It successful. The towns of the two counties are contributing to its success. Business men are taking an active part. What are the farmers doing? Bring in your stuff. Make an exhibit! GOOD TIME TO INVEST. Within the past year Umatilla county has seen the greatest activity ir irrigation development ever record ed in the county In a similar period. Values have advanced from 25 to 100 per cent on land partially or wholly under irrigation, while desert land which was in the raw state a year ago has advanced 2000 per cent, at least. The next few years will see even a greater development and advance in price, for the reason that most of the irrigated land Is Just now coming in to a state of productiveness, Just now beginning to yield a return and as yields increase, values will Increase, and those who want to Invest In this class of property can find no more auspicious time than now. The idle money hoarded In the banks of the county could be earning handsome returns for Its owners In developing the irrigated Bection. Strangers come Into the county and with a few thousand dollars for in vestment become wealthy within a few years from the matchless re sources of the county while much of the home capital Is to timid to try Its wings. XO MOKE IlACIIELOHS. There are no more bachelors In Pendleton. The Bachelors' club, bo long an ornament to Water street's most fashionable section, has dis banded. Cupid hag invaded Its ranks ar.d carried off as helpless victims Its most courageous and staunchest members until there are only a few lesser lights remaining, not enough for a quorum at dinner, and so the dashing array of gallants which haa been the pride and glory of Water street, is no more. One by one the proud rank has yielded; one by one those confirmed omen-haters, so to speak, has fal len into the snare, lost his head and landed full length In the meshes of MIGHT TEMPT RANKERS. The Spokane "Chronicle discussing the proposed bank guarantee plan in cluded In the democratic platform, says some important things which should cause both bankers and de positors to think seriously before un qualifiedly accepting the proposition which seems to be good business on first glance. While a guarantee of bank depos itors by the government might have many excellent features about it. there Is also another side and the Chronicle brings It out clearly as fol lows: The alleged panacea for all of our financial ills, the national guarantee of bank 'deposits, will probably not meet with general favor, for there Is a widespread belief that the sugges ted remedy would be worse than the disease. The agitation for the guarantee of bank deposits has naturally arisen because of the expose of unsound, speculative and dishonest banking methods, made following the failures during the last panic, but it is a grave question whether the proposed guar antee of deposits would result in the elimination of objectionable meth ods. On the contrary, In the opinion of some people. It might lead to a fur ther development of the rrlls which It is designed to prevent. Depositors would seek out the in stitutions offering the most liberal in ducements knowing their own money to be safe. This would tempt the banks to take speculative risks with depositors' rroney; for In the general scramble for business they might have to pay such large Interest on dnposlted fundi that conservative Investments would no longr-r be profitable. The mor speculative of the hank would eventually go to the wall, and the conservative bankers would hav? to dip Into their pockets to make good the losses of th" very rivals who had rut Into their business. Guarantees of bank deposits, it Is feared, would virtually put a premlun. on speculative dishonesty. LIVING 09 YEARS IXDKK THE GROUND. Once In Tibet we passed two young lamas from' Kham, says Svcn Hedln in Harper's Magazine. They did not walk like ordinary pilgrims, but lit erally measured off the distance with their on bodies, Lying down full length on the ground, they would join their hands and read a prayer, then make a mark on the ground, nrlse. Join their hands together again over the-lr heads, and muttering a prayer, take a few steps forward to the mark, to fall full length once again and repeat the entire ceremony nil the way round the mountain. Performed In this manner by "prostration" the journey took 20 days. The two lamas we saw had onlv done about half the distance nnd they contemplated doing the whole journey twice. One of them who was to return there after having complet ed his duty as pilgrim. The other- he was barely 20 years old was to pass the remainder of his earthly life In a dark grotto on the banks of the Upper Tsangpo. Few forms of self-mortification are of such value as this life spent In the dark, this irbsolute separation from the world, from one's fellow-men and the light of the sun. . In Limga gunpa I obtained much valuable In formation regarding this curious custom. In the prayer grotto of that place a little stone hut at the foot of a cliff was then a lama who had al ready been Immured for three years. No one knew him, no one knew whence he came nor what his name was, and even were one to know his name it was forbidden to mention It before human beings. But they told me that the day he went Into the grotto he was followed la most solemn procession by all the red monks of the monestary, and when all the ceremonies prescribed in the holy books had been gone through, the narrow entrance Into the grotto had been closed up again. We were standing outside it. I asked the head lama whether he could hear us talk. He replied, "Oh, no, he can neither hear nor see; he is sunk night and day in profound meditation." "How do you know that he Is alive?" "The food (tsamba) which 3 passed In to him once a day througn an underground passage Is eaten up by moning; but should we find the by morning; but should we find the should understand that he had died." fco fc&o ja DPJ OUT BL0GE HUMORS Tlio Paris Rath Peddler. There are In Paris many houses that are bathless, more, perhaps, than In American and English cities. Thb Is of course, a great Inconvenience to the inhabitants, and an Ingenious Frenchman, realizing this, goes through the streets with a bath outfit which he lets on hire to anyone who cares to pay the small fee of 25 cents he demands, and, moreover, ha sup plies the necessary hot water. The skin is not simply nn outer covering of the lunly, lnil l!iro:i;li its thousands, of pores and glands it performs the great and necessary work of regulating our temperatures, and also assists in disposing of the refuse and waste matters of the system by the constant evaporation that goes oji through these little tubes. To perform these duties tlio t issues and fibres which connect and surround the pores and gland.", must lie continually nour ished by pure blood. When from any cause the ciicnlation becomes infected with impurities and humors, it loses its strengthening powers and begins to disease and irritate the delicate tissues, and produces Kc.enia, Actio, Tetter, or some other itching, disfiguring skin trouble. S. S. K. cures skin diseases of every kind by going down into the circulation and neutral i.ing and remov ing the'iinpurities and humors. It changes the qua'ily of the blood from an I. -rid, fiery fluid to a cooling, health -producing str-.mi, which, instead of irritating and. inflaming the skin, cities and nourishes it by its soothing, healthful qualities. A new apparatus has been devised by n physician in Munich, by which the Inside of tho stomach can be clearly photographed. The camera Is actually swallowed by the patient, and when It reaches Its destination the interior of the stomach Is Illumi nated by a small electric lamp at tached to the apparatus. At the bottom of the camera is a photographic film 20 Inches long and a quarter of an Inch wide. The phy sician pulls a cord which runs the film past tho lease, tho electric lamp Is turned on, and the Impression Is made on the sensitive film.
