PENDLETON, OfcE. 0. 1 i l REBUILDING II MAIN LI Because of the high state of effi ciency of the new North Bank road of the Hill lines from Kennewick to Port land, and the rapid extension of that road to Spokane, the O. R. & N. com pany'i main line will be rebuilt from Portland to Umatilla, says the Oregon Daily Journal. Work Is being rushed and about $20,000 per mile Is being spent on the reconstruction. At some places on the, reconstruction. At some places the new track Is already In use. Miles and miles of track and In numerable curves are being abandon ed between Portland and The Dalles. Heavy rails are being laid In long tangents through heavy cuts and over high fills, and on ties that have been scientifically tested to resist the ele ments. The entire line ts being bal lasted heavily with coarse gravel and sand. When completed the road will be equal to any American railroad In construction, and capable of high speed. The present rate of 15 or 20 miles per hour will suddenly Jump to 40 miles. At many places tangents three or four miles long will super sede a dozen sinuous curves. The old track Is being crossed and recrossed many times within a Bingle mile by the new straight track. Large slices of mountain are being cut off and long fills made. Concrete culverts art upplanting old wooden structures. Steel Bridges for Trestles. Steel bridges are taking the places cf trestles and at some places where the sign "Slow, 15 Miles an Hour," has for years warned the locomotive engineer, the transportation Is bring Ii.g forth long straight runs where four times that speed can be made. The completion of the work as far as The Dalles Is counted upon to oc cur this year. The Pacific Coast Con struction company has a force of 1000 men and a large number of construc tion trains at work. Compressed air drills, steam shovels and other mod ern equipment are being utilized to gain time. The prize Is the eastern Washington and Spokane passenger traffic, which the Spokane, Portland & Seattle rail road company threatens to whisk away from the O. R. & X. company as soon as the latter road Is complet ed through to Spokane. About 3000 men are now at work on construction of the last named between Kenne wick and Spokane, and It Is up to the O. R. & NT. company to give up the business to the shorter and faster road or rebuild the O. R. & X. main line In such a manner as to enable It to compete successfully for the business. Belter View of Falls. Oldtimers will hardly recognize the new O. R. & X. line between Portland and The Dalles. At Multnomah Falls a long tangent Is being built, eliminat ing the In-curve that followed the contour of the cliffs. The new line Is further toward the river and gives i much better view of the falls. At Oneonta Falls a series of enor mous cuts and fills are being made for more than two miles, to make the road conform to a gentle curve around the high basaltic cliffs that Jut out to the Columbia river. For the next two miles east the old curves along the cliffs are abandoned and a long Churches Pendleton pastors are returning from the summer vacation and regu lar services are being resumed at all the churches.
