There Is a noticeable absence of Weary Willies, members of the ho hocular fraternity. When questioned with relation to this quietness, Chief of Police John Ellis said today to a Tribune man: There Is absolutely no excuse for an kilo man In Idaho. Men are want ed In the north and south parts of the state, In 'the cast and in the west. The forthcoming beet harvest In this re gion will demand many laborers. Ca nal work In the south end Is calling for all the workmen available. Contractors at Shoshone, at Good ing, at Bliss, at Twin Falls, at HI1 listcr, at Nam pa, at Boise, are clam oring for men. On top of this the Northwestern railroad down the Snake rlvor from Huntington to Lew- l.ston Is being rushed to completion. One hundred and twenty-five men are now at work on the railroad building. Double shifts are run because of the scarcity of labor. Heppner Needs Water Supply. The matter of a more abundant water supply for Heppner Is a queS' tlon that should bo looked to by the city council, says the Heppner Times, Whether the council has given the matter any thought, we do not know, at least It has not been discussed at meetings, hence It Is doubtful If the council has considered the proposition very earnestly. While Heppner has a very good wa ter system It Is not adequate for the requirements of the town, , especially during the dry summer months, that Is, for all purposes. Some favor a gravity system, contending that an abundant supply can be secured on upper Willow creek at a distance not to exceed 15 miles. It ts atso thought that a suflclent amount could be had In this way for a sewer system, some thing that we cannot now have, ow ing to a shortage of water. Right now Is a splendid time to bring the matter before the people when the need Is so apparent Hoi,,fkng Will bo "Shy." Some of the first signs of approach ing fall were In evidence yesterday when two men were seen visiting lo cal grocery Btores and other business establishments where are kept sup plies of empty boxes and barrels, says the Yakima Republic. New History of Idaho. W. H. Bingham, representing the publishing house of Henry Taylor, Jr., & Co., of Chicago, has been In the city for several days looking over the field with a view of getting out a history of Idaho, says the Boise Cap ital News. He has engaged with W. A. Goulder, the well-known pioneer and newspaper man, to collect data for the history, and he will begin at once gathering material. In the spring a force of expert his torical writers will come here and put the matter in shape. It Is the Intention to make this a most complete history of Idaho from the earliest times right down to the present, special attention being given to the early history, and will be dif ferent from anything heretofore pub lished. Mr. Goulder's long residence In Ida ho, his newspaper work and wide ac quaintance make him a valuable as sistant In preparing a work of this sort Land Office Line Growing. The line at the land office waiting for the opening of entry books on a section of land In Wallowa county on September 15, continues to grow, says the La Grande Observer. The num ber of seats occupied now reaches close to the 20 mark, and evidence of more still to come, exists If dally additions are made to the line, the rush will prove the greatest In recent years, both from a standpoint of num bers and length of time It lasts. Tne coia nignts are proving ex tremely disagreeable to the line-men. When it Is uncomfortable to sleep In a tent, it most necessarily Is even more disagreeable to be forced to wait on the cold pavements of the street, looking anxiously forward for the peep of dawn which brings warmth and company.
