Athena, April 30. Wheat never looked better la the Athena country at this season of the year, according to the old settlers. There Is some complaint of It being dry. but it has not been dry long enough to hurt the wheat, and it will not suffer unless it remain dry some weeks longer. The growers are sure of more rain in May, and this will Insure a good crop. In some localities the growers complain of weeds, but with the exception of a very few Instances there will be no damage from them. Mrs. Charles Brotherton, who has been critically ill with pneumonia. Is better. Sunday her life was despaired of, but now chances for her recovery are considered favorable by Dr. Sharp, the attending physician. M. L. Watts and Attorney S. F. Wit son have purchased 160 acres of land on the reservation foothills from Mrs. F. P. Page. Consideration $39 per acre. It is wheat land. . Lawrence Lleuallen was in the city Sunday from Adams. Marshal Gholson and a force of men are engaged In putting down new crosswalks In the city. The Misses Grace and Lula Ray visited friends in Athena Tuesday. The meetings being carried on at the M. E. church by the Evangelist Carradlne of St. Louis, are being well attended, and they will continue in' definitely. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schmidt were In from their ranch yesterday in their automobile to meet Mrs. Welshart of Pendleton, who will visit them for a few days. A number of people from here went to the ball game in Walla Walla Sun day, and many will go to Pendleton on the excursion next Sunday. The Caledonian picnic will take place May 22 and 23. The committee is now engaged in arranging the pro gram and this promises to be the most successful affair of the kind yet given here. , Ten additional carloads of potatoes have been secured by Seattle buyers, on the mountain ranches east of town. This additional purchase brings the total up to '40 carloads, which have been purchased In the last 10 days. The big shipment will be madefrom Athena over the Northern Pacific. Delivery of the potatoes commenced yesterday, and will be rushed from now on. Athena and Adams played a splen did game of bail on the Athena dia mond Sunday afternoon. Athena won by the close score of 3 to 2. Dave Stone pitched for Athena, and Dr. Fre dLleuallen for Adams. The Athena team plays Pilot Rock at this place next Sunday. Market Pay Saturday. Over $4000 worth of property, a goodly portion of It being horses and cattle, has been listed for sale on Athena's first market day. which takes place next Saturday. Two auc tioneers will be employed, and no charge will be made for selling prop erty. A large number of people from the country surrounding are expected to be here for this sale. Will Build Line. The company which Is now operat ing an electric line between Walla Wfilla and MITton, and which has se cured a franchise to build through Weston, Is investigating conditions here. They are In correspondence with influential men of the city for the purpose of securing right of way in the Athena country, and it Is be lieved that It is the intention of the company to build on to this place as soon as possible, though there Is no certainty as to when It will be run from Milton this way, though nil of the right of way has been secured to Weston, and through the town. It Is believed that If Pendleton will make the proper effort the company can be Induced to build on to the county seat before many months. NORMAL PLAY. Coggswell of Freewater, worthy grand matron, was present and the team work was executed to perfection, after which an elegant banquet was served. Mrs. Bert Winn has returned to Helix after visiting with relatives here for a time. Those from here who attended the booster meeting In Pendleton Monday night are of the opinion that the meeting will yet result In much good in the county. All parts of the coun ty should be with Pendleton In the booster cause. Jesse Lleuallen has Just gone out on another sheep shearing expedition after spending a few days In the town. Wheat Is looking fine In this sec tion of the county and the growers are looking forward to one of the best crops In the history of the coun ty, unless something very unusual happens. Milton, April 30. W. A. Bannister was awarded the contract yesterday by the Milton Fruitgrowers' union, for the construction of their new fruit packing house. It Is to be a two-etory frame building .40x100, and the con tract price is $3125. J. B. Baldwin has sold to J. A. Mar tin 20 acres of land west of town for $1000. Charles Albright, who recently pur chased four dwellings In Milton, has such faith In the future of Milton that he has purchased from Mrs. M. J. Moss property for a home, paying $250 for It, and he has let the con tract for a cottage to cost $1000 to W. A. Banniser. J. B. Frazler has sold 40 acres of wheat land east of town to W. H. Fra- rier, for $3000. The city council has adopted resolu tions whereby the city will undertake to provide for the maintenance of the library at this place, as soon as a suitable building, can be provided. Efforts will now be made to get in touch with Andrew Carnegie for the purpose of getting aid from him. The fruitgrowers have their spring work under way, and everything looks fine in this section of the county for a bumper crop. The late frosts did no damage In this section of the coun try, though some was reported in the vicinity of the state line. Mrs. A. S. Pearson, who has been quite 111 for some" days is considerably Improved, and it is believed that she will be entirely well In a few days time.
