Weston. April 28. The teachers' In tltute, which was held here Saturday for the teachers In this end of the county, proved to be a very successful affair. The teachers read some very Interesting1 papers, and the entire pro gram was much enjoyed. The attend ance was good and County Superin tendent Frank K. Welles expressed himself as being much pleased with the results of the Institute. Weston XornuU Won. In the game of baseball Saturday between the team of Pearson's acad emy in Walla Walla and the Normal nine, the score resulted In favor of the Normals by a score of J to 3. A large crowd witnessed the game. Mrs, Lilly Lane, who has suffered another stroke of paralysis. Is very HI and very little hopes for her recovery are being entertained. A number of Weston people went over to' Walla Walla Sunday on the big baseball excursion, George Carmlchael has returned from the agricultural college, Corval 11s where he has been taking a liter ary course. The farmers about here would like to see less wind and more rain this spring. The crops are looking fine so far, however, and an early rain Is ex pected. The Weston mountain farmers who have contracted to sell their potatoes to Seattle buyers, are busy hauling them to Athena from where they will be shipped out over the Northern Pa cific to Seattle. Bleakney, principal of Pendleton academy, 'occupied the pulpit In the Pilot Rock church Sunday morning and evening, In the absence of Rev, Levi Johnson, who Is at Moro, attend ing the spring meeting of the Pen dleton presbytery. The meetings were well attended. Grandma Sturtevant, who has been quite 111 for some time. Is considera bly improved. The Pilot Rock public school has been closed for the present term . A number of the people from here have been county seat visitors of late. The-crops are looking first-class In the vicinity of Pilot Rock of late. An excellent crop of wheat and rrults are expected. Fruits will be raised In this section of the country more extensively than heretofore, as It can be easily shipped out since the railroad has been run In. Pilot Rock has grown of lat. and It will grow more as the country will demand It. New land Is being taken up, and it will be only a short time when many hundreds of additional acres of land will be producing crops. A Card. Fire of Yesterday Causes Much Ex citement. Milton, April 28. Workmen are placing In position the steel piers for the bridge at the east end of Fair street, which Is to be constructed by the county. The structural steel Is expected dally and the construction will be pushed as fast as possible. The original plans were to have the road open by June 1. This bridge will cost nearly $4000. Considerable excitement was occa sioned by the fire here yesterday morning which destroyed the opera house and two dwellings near by. For a time it looked as though much more damage would be done.
