Halley farm on Wild Horse creek, consisting of about 1000 acres of fine land, was sold to Councilman Jurgen Mumm and ex-Mayor James A. Fee of this city, the total price being $22,750. It Is understood that the bottom land Including the alfalfa land, dairy barn, dwelling house and orchard was purchased by Mr. Fee for 15750 while the upland Including wheat and pasture land and comprising about 690 acres was purchased by Mr. Mumm for $17,000. The late Judge Halley had planned a model dairy farm there and had made excellent Improvements In many ways and the farm Is one of the best In this section of the county. I, That the students of the University of Oregon engage in practical work along with their text book training is shown by the following from the Ore gon Weekly, the official organ of the V. of O.; A party of mining engineering stu dents left Thursday evening to visit the quick silver mine at Black Butte, neur Cottage Grove. The party Is un der the supervision of Engineer Walt er M. Eaton, as Prof. Arthur C. Ter rlll, head of the mining department, is at present In California. While at the mine the students will divide Into two parties to survey the mine, making all possible computa tions regarding the mile or more of tunnels belonging to the mine. The Black Butte quicksilver mine, which is located IS miles south of Cottage Grove, is the best equipped mine in Lane county, and is known through out the mining world for certain pat ented Improvements which are Install ed there. Newport and wife re turned to their home at Hermiston today after attending the booster meeting last night. J. S. Belf, a well known resident of the Athena country, was a visitor here yesterday, being down upon some land business. George Hill, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Hill and who has Just graduated from a pharmacy school in St. Louis, is now home again. Mrs. Nettie Heacock of Gresham, is now here upon a visit with her son, Mark Heacock, and wife. She will remain about a month. K. G. Warner, the well known sheepman, went down to Barnhart to day to view the shearing plant at the J.'E. Smith ranch In operation. Roy Alexander left this morning for Boise, where he will meet a Stein Block salesman for the purpose of making fall purchases for the Alex ander store. Miss Rosie Southwell, who was op erated on at the hospital for appen dlcltls a. few days ago by Dr. Cole, Is getting along nicely and will soon be able to return home. North Side of River making1 Improve- HM'iils iii Streets and Walks. In no part of the city has there been such changes wrought In con dltlon of streets and walks during the past fiw weeks as In North Pendle ton. Portions of Jackson, Garfield, Madi son, Monroe, Washington, Perkins. Bush and Wilson streets have been placed on grade while new sidewalks have been constructed along each of these. Among the last walks to be built is one block of concrete along the west side of Madison between Jackson and Washington and a con crete walk along the Jackson street side of the Johnson half of the block between Monroe and Madison. Two blocks of wooden walk have also been built on the west side of Perkins ave nue, between Jackson and Wilson streets. Th graders are still at work on Garfield street and as soon as they are through, still other walks will be constructed. , ' These Improvements have also served as an inspiration In other lines. One handsome new residence Is well under way, another has been an nounced, while the paint brush and muck rake have been used Industriously. Will Lecture Tonltfit. D. Maurice O. Fltzmaurice, a noted humorous lecturer and graduate of Dublin university, will lecture at the M. E. church this evening on. the subject, "The People of Ireland and Their Melodies," the lecture to be given under the auspices of the choir of the church. Dr. Fltzmaurice re cently lectured at Heppner under the auspices of the public schools and comes highly commended as a speak er from that town. His lecture on the melodies of the Irish people will strike a popular chord in the hearts of many and it promises to be an en tertaining event. Irrigation Talk No. 7. Lands Ruined By Water. It is as important to consider the drainage of irri gated lands as their watering. Much land last season at Yakima never had the water turned upon it any time during the year. The land had been formerly over-watered and was sour ing. Without water the crops markedly increased. The Furnish-Coe Lands lie above every other project in the great irrigable region in Northern Umatilla county and their drain age is superb. Still we feel like publicly warning purchasers against over-watering. Soak the soil thoroughly and deeply during the cooler months of winter and early spring, but use the water afterwards' very sparingly or in fact not at all.
