Aa a preliminary atep toward actual construction on the big Blackfoot storage reservoir, which will Impound flood water for the Irrigation of the Fort Hall tract, a contract has been signed with William WInchell of Hen ry for the cutting and early delivery of 000 cords of wood at the dam site The contract was awarded by Major John J. Granville, superintendent In charge of the Fort Hall project, and Mr. Wlnchell will commence work at once. 'I in' wood Is to be used for fuel !n the operation of a temporary power plant at the dam, machinery for which will be on the ground with in about 30 days, at which time the actual work of constructing a big re talnlng works will commence. Major Granville was In the city yesterday from Ross Fork, and announced that the work of enlarging the canals on the reservation has already begun where It was left off last fall, and canal building machinery for con struction the main dich is expected shortly. The Farmers Friend Canal company has commenced the work of putting In a permanent wing dam at the head of their canal about two miles north east of town, says a St. Anthony pa per. The dam Is to be solidly con structed and Is so designed that It Is expected that mush Ice and high wa ter will flow smoothly over without Injury to the structure. To make the work much easier and economical the eompany has built a small railroad track along the canal bank to the dam on which will run small dump cars. The track Is about 300 feet long, and Eli Houghton says It Is the smallest, first Independent, only and most Indeendent railroad In Idaho. Annual passes over the line are being Issued to worthy citizens. The dam Is to be built of rock-ribbed cribs, braced un plentifully with gravel and cobble rock. As to whether people holding passes on the road will be expected to shovel gravel Is not stated by Mr. Houghton. the law which limits the amount of money which can be voted for the exhibition to one half of one per cent A meeting of the commissioners representees of the Commercial club and of the Horticultural union was held yesterday afternoon and a committee consisting of Dan Sin clalr, W. N. Irish and A. B. Weed was appointed to visit Seattle and select a site for the Yakima exhibit. Greek Fourth of July. Greek Independence day was cele- braed by the Greek colony of Poca tello, and there was merrymaking all along the line, says the Pocatello Tri bune. Business in all the Greek bus iness houses was suspended and the day was spent In feasting. Tuesday to the Greeks was what the Fourth of July la to the Americans. Up to May, 1463, the Greek nation extended north as far as the Danube river, and Macedonia Eplrus, Constan Inor.le and the surrounding states were all Greek territory. In May 1453, barbarians Invaded the country and the greater part of Greece fell under the rule of the Turks. They held rule over the country until 400 years later, when on March 25, 1821, the Greeks arose and declared their liberty. Then followed a war lasting eight years, at the end of which time the Greeks had gained a greater part of their territory, and their independ ence. Tuesday was March 25 on the Greek calendar used In this country. And all over the world where Greeks are assembled Independence day was celebrated. CThe people who do not live in this city and yet who'do iisome of then shopping here,'r are important to those of our merchants who seek wiuer markets. The county commissioners will pro vide in all $9000 towards defraying the cost of the county exhibit at the Seattle exposition next year, says the Yakima Republic. On this year's rolls an approrlatlon of $5000 Is pro vided for and the additional $4000 will be provided for on the tax rolls of next year, - thus conforming with Build 110.000 Country Home. Work has begun on a $10,000 house for E. J. Haasze on his property on Summit View road. The residence when completed will be one of the finest, best appointed and most mod ern houses of North Yakima or the surrounding valley. While the republicans held the limelight In na tional politics this week, by reason of the state conventions In New York and Massachusetts, the democrats will have their their share of publicity during the next seven days. The birthday of Thomas Jefferson, which falls on Monday, will likely be cele brated more generally than In recent years and many Important utterances may be expected. ,By far the most important of these celebrations will be the banquet of the National Democratic club in New York. A quarrel over the question as to whether William Jennings Bry an should be Invited to speak at the dinner threatened for" a time to dis rupt the club, but It Is now likely that the Nebraskan, If present, will add to the oratory of the occasion. The other speakers will be Presi dent Woodrow Wilson or r-rinceiuu University. Senator Owens of Okla homa, and Senator Simmons of North Carolina. Two Democratic Meetings. Two Important democratic state conventions will bo held Tuesday, those of New York and Delaware. The latter gathering will likely assume nn Importance not warrnntod by the Im portance of the state In national poll- tics, owing to the fact that It will mark the launching of a boom for Judge George Gray for president. For several months the Delaware jurist has occasionally been mention ed as the "logical leader" of the eastern democracy In Its opposition tO the candldncy of William J. Bryan, and his Indorsement by the conven tion of his home state Is expected to result In crystalizlng sentiment In his favor among those who dejslre an eastern cand'aie. The New York democratic state convention will also meet on Tues day, Carnegie hall, New York, hav ing been selected as the scene of the gotherlng. Sentiment among the committee favors an unlnstructed del egation from the Empire state, but there will probably be some opposi tion to this program. Many delegations In the up-state counties and cities have been instruct ed to work for the Interests of Bry- -. . i an. cnairman uonners oi me mme committee and many other prominent democrats are believed to favor Gov ernor Johnson and will attempt to se cure the election of delegates favor able to the Minnesota man. Mr. Bry an will be In New York nex,week and may attend the convention. The Michigan democratic state committee will hold a meeting in Lansing next Wednesday to fix the time and place for holding the state convention. It is likely that Mr. Bryan will receive the Indorsement of the committee, although Governor Johnson of Minnesota has gained many adherents In Michigan. The only Important republican state convention to be held next week Is that of Minnesota, called to meet in Minneapolis on Thursday. Secretary Tfft will undoubtedly be the choice of the convention for the presidency. Arizona republicans will hold their territorial convention In Tucson next Saturday, when two delegates, pledg ed to Taft, will be elected. The re publican territorial convention of Ha waii, to be held in Honolulu on Mon day. Is also likely to favor the war secretary. Taft Has a Fight On. The fight between the adherents and opponents of Secretary Taft will be continued in Massachusetts next week, when conventions will be held In several of the congressional dis tricts of the state. Present appear ances Indlcatte that the Taft boomers will be successful in the majority of the districts. George Gay was arrested at Pen dleton Tuesday, having in his posses sion the horse stolen from Police Ser geant Frank Morse last week, says a Walla Walla Item. He denies the theft, saying he bought the horse from a herder. The mules which were stolen at the same time have been located on Jasper mountain. above Waltsburg, some 30 miles from here.
