Iowa, where she was called on account of the death of her mother. Much Activity. The fruitgrowers are very busy In this section of the county at this time, Cleaning up orchards, spraying the trees, and cultivating the land prepar atory to harvesting a large crop of first-class apples, peaches, etc. The growers have found th need of spray ing and taking proper care of the trees and have been profiting thereby In the last couple of years. Prospects are bright for one of the largest crops of fruit ever grown in thla district. Milton Notes. Milton. April 11. H. M. Merrlfield has gone to Portland to visit for a few days. Mrs. Matt Mosgrove and son have gone to Portland where they will re main for a short time. Miss Fay Ebberhart of Walla Walla, has accepted the position of manager of the local telephone office In place of Miss Nellie Dorrlcut, who was forc ed to resign on account of poor health John Elam Is In Portland upon a brief business trip. Rerira Meetings. A series of revival meetings opened at the M. E. church In Milton last evening, and they will continue for at ka?t two weeks. Echo. April 11. Fifty men are employed .shearing sheep at the J. C. Wattenberger plant, which is run ning at full' capacity at the White- house a few miles from here. Two very rapid ihearers are In thla crew Henry Dow and Robert Conn, who have a record of shearing from 315 to 326 sheep per day. They are from Arizona and will only remain here during the shearing season. A great many thousand head will be sheared in this vicinity. Mr. Watterberger has the contract for operating the plant recently purchased by a num ber of the sheepmen of this section. Shearing will also be done at Nolin and In the Butter creek country. There are about 168,000 head to be sheared in Umailla county this sea son. The Echo teachera left this morn ing in a body to attend the teachers' Institute which la being held at Her mlston today. Land Sella. A great many hundreds of acres of land have been sold In this vicinity of late under the Irrigation projects. Over 1000 acres under the Furnish project will be put Into crops! A number of newcomers are coming In to settle on thla land and things look very prosperous for this end of the county. Candidates are seen here dally and politics seems to be the main topic of conversation. The Echo cornet band gave a dance last evening which was a very en joyable affair. F. L. Brundage, who has been In he barberlng business here for some time has sold out to T. E. Lucas of Portland. Mr. Brundage will farm near Echo. Manager Abe Pierce of the Pocar tello team learned yesterday that the I..' Grande team of professionals In the eastern Oregon league would not come to Pocatello for spring training. Yesterday A. Y. Lodell, a pitcher, and W. G. Kotteman, an Infielder, who have been signed by La Grande, ar rived In Pocatello from Portland, ex pecting to meet the team here, says the Pocatello Tribune. It was not until they had telegraphed to Mana ger Jack O'Brien of the La Grande bunch that they learned definitely that plans to do spring training In Po catello had been abandoned.
