standing for something, Instead of
having a backbone and political In
tegrity, he has followed along with
the current of corrupt politics and has
naturally been engaged with other
machine men In some of the dirtiest
deals in the history of the state of
Oregon.
Take his newspaper work here In
Pendleton as an example. He has
never come out boldly and fearlessly
for anything; he never commits him
self; he never takes any decisive
ground; he always deals In glittering
generalities; you never know where
to find him; he always leaves a loop
hole open by which he may back out
of any situation; he dodges, shirks,
slides around Issues; he answers ar
gument with ridicule; he pats every
body on the back, but says nothing
that could be construed Into a deci
sive, well grounded sentiment on any
subject or issue.
What would he be as congressman?
And turning to the girl's compan
ion, she said: "And you can help her
by thinking of her as being success
ful; look forward to her number and
think that It will be the best; send
her good thoughts when she gets up
to sing; give her courage; give her
assurance of triumph, and she will

sufficient. The people will now take

It may be pertinent to ask what
the Tribune ever did to help improve
moral or civic conditions In Pendle
ton? Less than nothing; it has been the
secret supporter of the gambler, the

their mistake was when the morning
paper was forced to the desperate

duce people to take or read the paper
under any circumstances.
