Captain Mikkelsen's expedition tra versed the continental shelf In the Beaufort sea and ascertained that if land d"es lie beyond the sea it Is an Independent continent. He has ob tained Information concerning ocean currents which will be Invaluable to him when he makes his next attempt to attain the unknown continent. Make ltafw Out or Sleds. Captain Mlkkelsen made use of a new Idea in polar travel by which he wns able to save 90 pounds weight on his sledges. In the tedious march over the Ice hummocks, the party frequently came upon open water. Captain Mlkkelsen had none of the native knryacks of which Dr. Nan sen made such good use, but Instead he made his boats when the occasion arose. He strapped a waterproof tarpaulin beneath his sledges and Improvised a raft which floated. The sledge expedition went further Into the unexplored Beaufort sea than had been planned by the royal geograph ical society of Indon and the Am erican Geographical society of New York, which directed the expedition. They found the continual shelf and had learned that beyond this shelf there wag water of great depth. It wns ascertained ' that the Beaufort sea was not a shallow basin, as had been supposed. The sledge expedition started from Flaxman Island March Is, 1907. They took 20 dogs. The trip occupied 86 days. During the Journey they en countered rubble Ice, which Is form ed by breaking up of thin Ice under pressure and freezing again, leaving the edge sticking straight up. For eight days of their Journey they ac complished only 14 miles. Captain Mlkkelsen has two piano to attain the polar continent One Is a boat and sledge trip from Point Bar row, taking only a small amount of provisions and trusting to finding the Ice-capped land, the shores of which he believes will support human life His other plan Is to fit out another ship which will be frozen in the polar pack as far north as Point Barrow as he can drive the vessel and to use It as a basis of supplies for his sledge Journey. The local oil company, organized for the purpose of making a thor ough investigation of the oil pros pecta in this section, sent an order last week to Bradford, Pennsylvania, for tool and machinery with which to sink the wells, and they confident ly expect to begin active operations within the next 60 days. Leases for more than 14,500 acres of land in the Opal Prairie, Culver and Lamontu districts have been signed, and many others are expected to sign within the next two weeks. This was the information given out last Saturday by memtxM-s of the com pany residing here, says the Madras Pioneer. Only one will will he drilled to be. gin with. The tools mid machinery ordered will be used in connection with the big Lovelaod drill, and with new machinery the hole will be sent down lo a depth of several thousand feet If necessary. A thorough test will be made of the best prospect the company has on Its leased ground, and if indications Justify It, other wells will be sunk at once at other points. The local company is backed by Portland capital, and say that they have plenty of money In sight to thoroughly prospect their ground for oil. A dispatch from Kimball, S. D., says: The worst prairie fire in many years is sweeping through the country here, laying waste thousands of acres of land and burning farmhouses and barns. The loss will be enormous The fire started four miles, east of Pukwanna, and Is now sweeping to ward Charles City. The flames pass ed four miles south of Kimball, and the last reports are to tlte effect that the fire Is half way to Platte. Many buildings and, school houses have been destroyed.
