There are many men in the "bread line" who will answer this question with a bitter, csontempt uous negative. It is a strange but Incontrovertible fact that many, per haps even a majority, of the unfor tunates who have been reduced to the necessity of "hitting the bread line" during the last winter have been men of more than ordinary educa tional attainments. At one charitable organization on the East Side over 500 graduates or students of prominent universities applied for work. That employers doubt the practical usefulness of col lege men, even In the least Important positions, is shown by the fact that in nearly every case the preference was given to applicants who did not give their educational acquirements as beyond the high school grade. As the hour of midnight approach es tonight, a mournful body of men will gather In the bar room of the Fifth Avenue Hotel and hold a wake over the remains of the famous hos telry that has been their home. When the clock strikes 12 the lights will go out. the doors will be locked and the shutters closed and the last guest will sadly wend his way to the street. In a few days the work ot demoli tion will commence, and a modern skyscrapper office building win soon occupy the place where the hotel now stands. In addition to the "Prince of Wales. many other members of royal fami lies have stopped at the hotel, among them Emperor Dom Pedro of Brazil, Crown Prince Uareo of Slam, Prince Iturblde of Mexico, Prince Devowon- gse of Slam, the Marquis of Lome son-in-iaw or Queen Victoria, and many others. Nearly all the presidents since the days of Lincoln have written their names across the registers of the hostelry. Portugal Is on the eve of a general election for a new Chamber, to succeed the legisla tive body dissolved by Franco, the ate dictator. The administration has divided seats equally between the conserva tive and Liberal parties, with 20 per- onal friends of the premier holding he balance of power.
