Now, however, comes the report of a collossal sugar combination at San Francisco, which has gained absolute control of the sugar supply. Inglehard says of the "dry territory" In the United Stateu, In April Review of Reviews: In two thirds of all the territory of the United States the saloon has been abolished by law. Forty years ago there wer 3,500,000 people living In territory whtre the sale of liouor was prohibited Now there are 36,- 000.000 people Under prohibitory law. Sine that time the population of the country has scarcely doubled, while, the population Jn prohibition territory has Increased tenfold. There are 20,000,000 people In the 14 southern states. 17,000,000 of whom are under prohibitory law in some form. In 1900 there were 18, 000.000 under prohibition in the Uni ted States; now there are 36,000,000. In eight months state-wide prohibi tion has cleared the saloon from an area as great a that of France. In that area there Is a solid block of territory 300 miles north and south by 720 miles east and west, ln which on the first day of next Jan uary a bird can fly from the Mississip pi to the Atlantic ocean, and from the boundary of Tennessee to the Gulf of Mexico, without looking down upon a legalized saloon. Great Brit ain and Ireland could be set down over this space without covering It. There would be 10.000 square miles of "dry" territory left as a border. FIRST-BORN OF PUYALLUP, Yakima Man Claims Distinction of Being "Flriw Wlrite Child," Etc. J. H. Boatman of North Yakima, the first white child born In the Puy- allup valley, is now at Puyallup par ticipating In a celebration there In anniversary of the start made 66 years ago by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willis Boatman, from Auourn, 111., by ox team and prairie schooner for Oregon and Washington, says the Yakima Republic. All the children living, with their families, were present. Mr. Boatman settled on his present farm January 11, 1854, and the present North Yaki ma rancher, John Boatman, was born there on July 28 of that year. The old cabin, which was the origi nal homestead, Is still In existence. Not a nail was used In its construc tion About It centered the festivities on Sunday, which was the anniversary day Mr. Boatman, the elder, relates for newspaper publication how he de clined to purchase for a plug of to bacco a homestead relinquishment at Sumner.
