R. ft N. have reached North Lewlston and In a short time the work of painting the Clearwater rail road bridge will be commenced, says the lewlston Tribune. The cars ac commodate a crew of 30 painters. Pour of the cars are used ror wag ing, dining room and kitchen facili ties and the fifth for supplies. It had been planned to Degin me wui of painting the bridge Immediately upon the arrival of the cars, but later It was decided to wait until the rivet ing of the structure Is further ad vanced The crew will be brought here In a few days The train Is the one kept In regular service by the O. R. & N. and came here direct from Portland. The work on the last span of the bridge on the south side of the river Is now receiving. the attention of the bridge construction crew and the steel will reach the abutment pier during the week. The work of In stalling the braces that will extend along the top of the bridge will then receive attention. The riveting work, which was started on the north side, has now reached a point this side of the draw span and main channel. There now seems no possibility of a doubt that the bridge will be en tirely completed and ready for the operation of trains by tne latter part of this month, thus enabling the ser vice Into Lewlston to be inaugurated n planned. For the fiscal year ending March 6, (he state veterinarian reported that there hud been 116 glandcred horses destroyed. While In this year more glandered horses were destroyed than In either of the preceding years In which the law has been in effect, It docs not show that the disease is on the Increase, the state veterinarian having had more time during the past year In which to look up the source and any reported cases of infection. The bourd decided at the meeting last evening to vigorously enforce the law relatlvo to the removal of stock and cattle from the state. J. W. The system adopted by the board at Its last meeting In December, that of paying a dollar a scalp for animals has proved very effective and Is bringing much better results than the former plan of paying hunters so much a day for killing animals. Dr. Hlnkly, city health officer, got busy yesterday and talked to the gov erning board of the Commercial club relative to the plans of a cleanup for Lewlston and his advice was accept ed with a rapidity and enthusiasm that It is hoped will be followed out on the day designated, says the Lew lston Tribune. The city had agreed to employ taa ma to carry off the rubbish, sub ject to city control as to the teams to be employed. Next Friday was the time designated for cleaning up and the following morning was designated as the particular period when the teams should assemble to carry oft the -debris. That the wholesale butchers are trying to get a coiner on the local meat market and run out the small er Independent butchers, Is the con fession of one of the wholesale mer chants of this city, says the Spokane Chronicle While he would not allow his name to be used, he said that he had been selling goods to the meat consumers of Spokane at less than cost for the last six weeks and gave as one of the reasons the fact that the wholesalers were endeavoring to put the smaller Independent butchers out of business. Stuck to His German. Christian Zlegenhagen, who died In The Dalles recently, was 92 years old at the time of his death, had lived In the United States 41 years and had never learned the English language, When he first came to tnis country he settled In a Oermun community in the east, and upon his arrival In The Dalles 11 years ago, found that he could not acquire English. He is survived by 20 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great givat grandchild.
