Stop! Look! Listen! The past few weeks has seen several of the politicians in Gold Hill visiting the voters. Some of them have a fairly hon est story to tell the people whose votes they desire. Others deal in ambiguous statements that sound big but mean nothing. Now Mr. or Mrs. Voter, do you ever stop to analyze the promises of the average candidate for office? Do you look him in the eye and ask yourself if you would tru st him with your purse? Do you think of him as a man that you would want to enforce the laws that protect you and your little ones? Very few of you do. There are some, but very few. This paper believes that any can didate who seeks the favor of the people should put themselves down in black and white and tell the voters just what they wil do and what amount of money they are going to save the people One man told us the other day that thousands of dollars could be saved every year “if the elective heads would dispense with surplus deputies.” No doubt but what he was right. How many of these candidates come out in the public press and tell the voters just what they are going to do? There are a few who do but mighty few. Now we believe that the public moneys that come into the hands of these men who ask for your support is really a public trust and as such should be spent care fully. Even more carefully than their own. Do they do it? Now on the square, do you really think they do? Your own com mon sense tells you no. Now is the time for these men to come out and tell us voters just what they are going to do. If they cannot tell the voters in public print just how they stand, they are men who had better be kept at home. When ever you see a candidate who is AFRAID to come out into the'open there you have a person who is seeking the office for some hidden motive best known to himself or his MONEYED BACKER. G el« HSI - - Oregee Day <eie»hone N a. 2 Lu The past month we heard a politician who when asked if he When you consider the benefit of having a checking ac was going to let the people know his views thru hia local paper count from which to draw and the safety in having the replied that he guessed the people needn’t worry, and besides if canceled checks as permanent records you will deposit here he told them what he was going to do and put it in print they would make trouble for him if he happened to change his mind. That seems to us to be ju st the very reason why every man who runs for office should take the people into his confidence and tell them plainly in publicly printed advertising just what he is going to give them if they elect him to office. When such a man does this the people are more willing to tru st him, for they know that he has placed himself on record and must do as his ads claim. If a candidate will not place his promises in public print it looks very suspicious. Such a man never wants to let the people have any strings on him and takes the old time excuse as his motto, “If I can’t be elected without pledges, I don’t want the office.” If there is another man whom you know per sonally, vote for him instead. If there is no one whom you know, take the man who is not afraid to tell you in the public press just what he is going to do for you and yours. You have at least the chance of holding him to his public promises. There taken by a man that has had long practical experience are a few candidates this fall who have assumed the air of “The and in a perfectly equipped and up to the minute at I < public be damned” and such men are those who have not or will not make a public promise to the voters. Be careful, voters, * and keep these men at home where they belong. G old H ill , O regon . A. E.
