Kerr (D-Okla), the committee in the past year has held 24 field hear ings throughout the country and i sessions here. : An estimated 800 witnesses . gave their views on what should be done to prevent anticipated shortages because of increasing water uses and expanding popula tion. ! "The most serious aspect of the national water problem," Kerr - said, "is the lack of public aware-' ncss of its existence. ! "Many signs point to an im ' pending national water crisis. It I . may come gradually, as national ; growth strains the adequacy of! . water resources facilities. ! - "Or it may come suddenly, on! : the heels of drought ... but it ' - will most surely come unless wa ter resources development pro ! grams are reshaped to meet ris ing new problems ..." The committee is expected to come up with recommendations dealing with such subjects as: Construction of dams and reser- voirs; reuse of water; pollution control; waste reduction; explora- tion of groundwater resources; ; purification of salt water and : brackish water; reduction of eva- poration at lakes and reservoirs; . rainmaking, and application and effects of nuclear energy. .
