sional committee is preparing rec-
ommendalions to keep the United
States from running short of wa-
!" tor.
A select Senate committee on
. national water resources began
- last week and will continue
.through Friday working on a re-
- port to be given to Congress next
January. j
The report, based on the big-,
gest investigation o its kind
. ever made by a Congressional
committee, will recommend laws
. and policies aimed at conserving
and developing water resources.
: The committee is studying ai
summary oresentod hv a nrnfps. i
sional staff headed by Theodore
M. Schad, public works spceial
. ist on loan from the Library of
. Congress.
The senators arfi making addi
tions, deletions and recoramenda-,
lions aimed at helping rheir:
states and areas as well as the
nation.
- Headed by Sen. Robert S. Kerr
(D-Okla), the committee in the
past year has held 24 field hear
ings throughout the country and
i sessions here.
: An estimated 800 witnesses
. gave their views on what should
be done to prevent anticipated
shortages because of increasing
water uses and expanding popula
tion. !
"The most serious aspect of the
national water problem," Kerr
- said, "is the lack of public aware-'
ncss of its existence. !
"Many signs point to an im
' pending national water crisis. It I
. may come gradually, as national
; growth strains the adequacy of!
. water resources facilities. !
- "Or it may come suddenly, on!
: the heels of drought ... but it '
- will most surely come unless wa
ter resources development pro
! grams are reshaped to meet ris
ing new problems ..."
The committee is expected to
come up with recommendations
dealing with such subjects as:
Construction of dams and reser-
voirs; reuse of water; pollution
control; waste reduction; explora-
tion of groundwater resources;
; purification of salt water and
: brackish water; reduction of eva-
poration at lakes and reservoirs;
. rainmaking, and application and
effects of nuclear energy.
