Health Insurance Issue Dominates AMA Parley MIAMI BEACH, Fla. Wl The world's largest gathering of medi cal men opened Monday with na tional health insurance for the aged certain to be a leading topic. It's the 109th annual conven tion of the American Medical Assn., with some 14,000 physicians attending the five-day meeting. The 209-member House of Dele gates, AMA policy-making body, will meet throughout the week. It will select the recipient of the distinguished service award, nam ing a physician who has made an outstanding contribution to medicine. Dr. E. Vincent Askey of Los Angeles will be installed as presi dent Tuesday. Three speakers expressed di vergent views on health insur ance for the aged at the confer ence of presidents and officers of state medical associations Sun day. Paul Butler, Democratic parly chairman, told doctors they are dragging their feet on health re forms and said they had a "cu rious altitude toward his party s health proposals. "If socialized medicine should come to our country, it may well be that the medical profession it self has brought it about," But ler declared. Butler predicted that his party would endorse the Forand bill at its convention in Los Angeles next month. The bill, now before Congress, tied old age health in surance to the Social Security system. Thruston B. Morion, Republi can national chairman, said his party probably will propose a 'voluntary program to be worked out in conjunction with the states." Gov. Ross Barnett of Missis sippi told the doctors every state should take care of its own. The tinued to focus Monday on two men who insist they are not can didates for the presidential nom ination. The men are Adlai Stevenson the Democratic nominee in 1952 and 1958, and Nelson A. Rocke feller, the Republican governor of New York. Both clearly stated their posi t ons Sunday as noncandidaies But thai did not eliminate them as DossiDllllies. neuner saiu ne would refuse a draft. Stevenson's position emerged as a result ci a puouc oiaiugue with Eleanor Roosevelt, who has called for a Democratic ticket of Stevenson for president and Sen. John F. Kennedy of Massachu setts as vice president. READY TO SERVE "I have declined repeatedly to comment on questions about a 'draft,' " Stevenson said in a mes sage to Mrs. Roosevelt. "I think I have made it clear in my public life, however, that 1 will serve my country and my party whenever called upon." By ASSOCIATED PRESS spotlight con-, Mrs. Roosevelt, Court Grants Annulment con-, Mrs. Kooseveit, atier receiving the message, commented: "From this statement, I think you will find it clear that Mr. Stevenson is a candidate ..." Her intepretation, however, prompted Stevenson to state from Libertyville, III.: "I will not seek the nomination for president by the Democratic convention. There fore, I am not a candidate." Rockefeller gave his position on a television program when he was asked: "You will not under any circumstances between now and the convention declare your self as a candidate for the Repub lican nomination, is that correct? "That is correct," the governor replied. He said that Vice President Richard M. Nixon would receive the nomination. But Rockefeller also said that unless Nixon reveals new posi tions on defense and foreign pol icy, "I think it's going to make it very much more difficult for him to be elected." Rockefeller said he would sup port Nixon, if nominated, wheth er or not he elaborated his views. Meanwhile, a Democratic can didate, Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas, accused the Eisenhower administration of following a pol icy of drift in military and for eign affairs. ROME Wl An Italian court has granted Ingrid Bergman and Ro berto Rossellini an annulment of their Mexican proxy marriage. The courts opinion, filed by Judge Orlando Falco, was made public Monday by one of the at torneys involved in the case. The ruling paves the way for the Italian film director to mar ry Sonali Das Gupta, the wife of an Indian riovi? man who left her husband for Rossellini, bore the Italian a daughter and now is in Italy with him. PEACE PROGRAM Speaking on television pro grams sent to Florida and New York, Johnson said the United States should launch a world peace program. Another Democratic candidate, Sen. Stuart Symington of Mis souri, made a personal bid for support from the Florida delega tion to the Democratic National Convention. He told the delegates in Or lando that the nation's No. 1 problem was "security with sol vency" and he was best qualified to handle it. The delegates, pledged to vote for favorite son Sen. George Smathers on the first ballot, also heard Robert F, Kennedy speak on behalf of his brother, Sen. Kennedy, and Sen. Allen Bible (D-Nev) speak on behalf of Sen. Johnson. it- ...Father's Day ...
