Headed by Governor McKay, the dignitaries will throw switches which will formally set in op eration the container plant. Among those scheduled to par ticipate in the ceremonies, In ad dition to Governor McKay, are: Dorothy McCullough Lee, mayor of Portland; R. F. Hepenstal, of New York, vice nresirlnnt in 9 charge of the firm's Pacific di vision; a. i. Augensen, division manager of manufacture; A. C. Staley Jr., division manager of sales; Stanley J. Harlmann, Port land plant manager; E. G. Gross, Oregon district sales manager, and L. D. Jenkins, Washington district sales manager. CELEBRATE TWO DAYS The plant-opening celebration will extend over two days. The first day's activities, besides the formal start of production, will be highlighted by an employees' "B'amily Night" reception from 7 to 10:00 p.m., featuring tours of the plant for plant employees in the Portland area, their relatives and friends. Climaxing the two-day event will be an "Open House" for the general public Saturday. Sou venirs and refreshments will be provided. The paper container unit, when in full operation, will employ more than 100 men and women from the Portland area. It is lo- 26th avenue. Roberts pointed out that the company's Portland plant has an average employment of nearly 500 people. It produces cans for fruit, vegetable, fish and berry canning industries. LARGE TANKS INSTALLED Plant Manager Hartmann stat ed that in addition to modern, high-speed paper milk container lines, large tanks and pumping stations have been installed for receipt, storage, heating and dis pensing of paraffin for coating the insides and outsides of the fibre cartons. He added that provisions have been made for future expansion of the fibre container unit which has an annual rated capacity of 200 million containers for quart, pint and half-pint sizes. The two groups of city employes, suspended their petition campaign after the city attorney and the Salem Civil Service Commission! Firemen said they believed they still had about about 1,200 names on petitions which have been circulated by friends outside th civil service. They said many new helpers joined the wives of fire men in circulating petitions. S. P. Stevens, Portland, a vice president of the International As sociation of Firefighters, said at a meeting with firemen Tuesday, that in his long experience with the association he had never hearci of firemen being prevented from circulating a petition on such a matter. ; .
